A few different items to get into today in another edition of “News to Me,” including a look at couple offensive linemen and “The Island.”
The Tennessee Titans have some very good interior defensive linemen led by Jurrell Casey, who is super-quick into gaps.
With that being said, Brian Winters needs to step up.
Lost in the weeds of the Jets’ big comeback win over the Giants, was how much Winters struggled in that game.
He did not have a good game.
In the first quarter, defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins (Kris’ brother) beat Winters for a sack to end a drive.
In the second quarter, defensive tackle Markus Kuhn shed Winters and hit Ryan Fitzpatrick as he threw, causing an incompletion.
In the second quarter, Winters was called for holding cornerback Trumaine McBride on a blitz, but the penalty was declined since the the pass was incomplete.
In the third quarter, Kuhn shed Winters and blew-up a running play that went for no gain.
In the fourth quarter, Jason Pierre-Paul split Winters and Breno Giacomini and hit Fitzpatrick as he threw, and the ball fell incomplete.
Winters has a lot of natural ability, but his problem over the course of his Jets career has been inconsistency.
If he doesn’t start evening out his play, he’s no lock to be the Jets right guard next year. Dakota Dozier or Jarvis Harrison could certainly supplant him . . .
While on the topic of guards, I want to address what Manish Mehta wrote yesterday about James Carpenter.
Daily News Headline – “Jets offensive lineman James Carpenter is building Pro Bowl season.”
Note sure about that.
He had two bad plays in the fourth quarter, giving up a sack to defensive end Robert Ayers and he was beat by Cullen Jenkins who hit Fitz as he threw, and this forced the Jets to kick a field goal to make it 20-13.
These were two very bad plays in this crucial fourth quarter.
He was also was called for a late in this game.
I don’t agree with my friend Manish.
Maybe the agent got to him and sold him on this story.
Carpenter is pretty good, but not great.
Not a Pro Bowler, but a decent signing nonetheless . . .
It looks like Darrelle Revis is coming back this week, and that is a good thing for Gang Green.
I know I have been critical of Revis, but don’t get me wrong, he can still help the Jets.
But if Todd Bowles and Jets secondary coach Joe Danna continue to play him on “Revis Island,” they are living in the past. They should mix in some safety help and some zone concepts along the way.
Yes, he can help the Jets, but the Jets’ brass and coaches need to forget the huge contract, and treat him like a normal starting cornerback, not a superhuman entity.
All I’m saying is deal with reality, and he can help you. If you expect him to hold up on an island with no help, you are borrowing trouble . . .
