We will see what happens, but clearly it wasn’t a situation where the individual was acting with the utmost discretion. It clearly could have been handled better.
Jets wideout Robby Anderson was arrested at a music festival in Miami on Sunday. He arrested for obstruction of justice and resisting arrest with violence.
The police report stated he “was fighting with security after being told to leave. [He] refused to leave and was told by [an officer] to sit on the ground. [Anderson] tensed his body and pushed [the officer]. Anderson was redirected to the ground and continued to fight with police and security.”
Look I believe in due process, but it’s hard to imagine that Anderson was totally in the right in this situation.
Now I doubt he’s going to jail over this, but it’s likely wasn’t a choir boy in this situation either.
And it’s time for Todd Bowles to have sit down with this second-year receiver.
Sometimes when a guy goes from “nowheresville” to getting a lot of accolades, it can go to one’s head.
Perhaps Anderson going from undrafted free agent to not only making the Jets as a rookie, but playing a lot, made him a little cocky.
And I’m not just basing this on the incident at the Miami concert, but something else that happened recently.
I’ve been told that Anderson fired his agent Chad Weisling, and hired CAA to hire him. Weisling has a small agency, with clients including Mo Wilkerson, and CAA is a Cadillac agency with a who’s who of clients.
Why do this?
Weisling isn’t a bad agent. Look at the contract he got Wilkerson coming off a broken leg – $17 million-a-year.
Clearly Anderson thinks he’s going to make big money based on the talent he displayed as a rookie.
I personally think he’s getting way ahead of himself. He’s got two years left on his rookie contract – 2017 and 2018, and the Jets clearly weren’t going to do anything with him before that. Why should they? He’s locked up a low price.
Also, he was okay last year, but still has a lot to prove. We know he’s fast, but clearly needs to get a lot stronger so he can win 50-50 balls, win in traffic.
We will see what the Jets think of Anderson. Teams talk tough about having no tolerance for bad off-the-field behavior (like I said, we need to let due process take its course, but clearly Anderson’s behavior with police and security wasn’t ideal), but if they think a player can help them, their tolerance level is much higher.
So we will see how much they value him based on their reaction to this.
But clearly, Anderson needs a slight attitude adjustment based on the baseless firing of a perfectly good agent, perhaps putting himself in Canton too quickly, and now this incident. And let’s not forget his stay at Temple wasn’t smooth sailing. In 2013, he quit the team and went home to Florida.
I think the guy has a lot of potential, and seems like a good guy, but I think Todd needs to have a long talk with his fellow Temple Owl, and tell him, “You have done nothing yet, son – get your act together, of you aren’t going to be in the league long.”
