This name is always brought up as a guru, but does this name deserve guru status? That is debatable. But sometimes reputations take on a life of their own . . .
“If I were Bowles, I’d take a look at Bills quarterbacks coach David Lee, who served in the same position for the Jets under Rex Ryan (2013-14). Lee worked with Bowles in Dallas and Miami, and he’s known as an excellent teacher of fundamentals. They need a guy like that to fix Christian Hackenberg.” – Wrote an ESPN Jets reporter.
This Lee thing has always been a bit of mystery to me, and a couple of other long-time Jets beat writers. We talk about it all the time. Where did this reputation as a guru from? I’m not saying he’s a bad coach, but this idea that he’s “The Quarterback Whisper” is a mystery.
Who has he developed of note in the NFL?
Geno Smith? Mark Sanchez? E.J. Manuel? Cardale Jones? Tyrod Taylor?
Perhaps you can give him credit for his work with Tony Romo when he first arrived in Dallas. Lee was there for his first four years, so he clearly he helped Romo.
But in recent year, this QB guru thing has taken on a life of its own.
And also keep in mind, Lee was 11-41-1 at the head coach of UTEP from 1989-93.
That is pretty bad.
Personally, I don’t think this is the way the Jets should go.
Like I said, he’s not a bad coach, but his reputation is a little out of whack with his resume.
I actually think this Matt Nagy-idea that is being floated around isn’t a bad one.
He was co-offensive coordinator in Kansas City this past year with Brad Childress.
Nagy, a former Arena League QB, who had a cup of coffee in Jets camp, is 38, and has been coaching under Andy Reid since 2009 – first in Philly and then Kansas City.
I know the Chiefs offense wasn’t pretty yesterday, but Reid is one of the top offensive minds in football – a terrific game planner and play-caller, and Nagy has been around the guru now for eight years.
I think the Nagy should be heavily considered by the Jets. He’s also a Jersey guy so he’s comfortable in the area. Not all people are.
It’s possible the Chiefs could block his departure if they lose Childress to Buffalo, which is being heavily rumored.
But if they don’t, this guy should be on the Jets’ short list, which it looks like he is.
We will see where this goes, but where did this guru thing come from?
In my opinion, it probably started with Bill Parcells, who worked with Lee in Dallas, and goes way back back with him from a Vanderbilt staff in the 1970’s.
Also, sometimes you wonder if certain reporters are pushing certain candidates if there is a source relationship at work there.
I’m telling you, this goes on a lot. You scratch my back, I’ll scratch your’s.
But to me, Nagy makes more sense than Lee.
