It might need to cut back on the Father Flanagan stuff.
“Jets player Rashard Robinson has been accused of possessing marijuana-laced candy,” wrote the Associated Press. “Authorities say the 22-year-old NFL cornerback was pulled over in Morris County, N.J., in December and police found ‘THC infused Peanut Budda Buddah Candy’ in Robinson’s possession. Robinson was arrested and charged with drug possession and carelessly driving a 2018 Mercedes Benz. Police say the car smelled like marijuana.”
On October 31, the Jets traded a fifth-round pick to San Francisco for Robinson, who was a fourth-round pick of San Francisco in 2016.
The 49ers were pretty thin at cornerback when they traded Robinson to the Jets. That pretty much tells you how they felt about him. He had penalty issues in San Francisco this year, but perhaps there was more going on behind the scenes.
Look, I don’t want to come across as holier-than-though, but it’s pretty clear that Robinson needs to grow up.
The NFL has a cornerback shortage. Most teams don’t have enough quality players at the position. If a team is giving up on a young cornerback so quickly, may the buyer beware.
Let’s not forget, Robinson was suspended at LSU for a failed drug test, and while on suspension he was arrested in June 2015 for unauthorized entry into a teammate’s apartment, and that was end of his time in Baton Rouge.
Whoever was behind the Jets’ trade, whether it was Brian Heimerdinger or Mike Maccagnan, they might need to pull away from this Father Flanagan stuff.
You aren’t running a home for delinquent kids. You are running an NFL team.
Look, on a human level I hope that Robinson gets the help he needs. He had drug issues in Louisiana and now New Jersey. I’m not here to debate the pot issue. All I know, as we sit here right now, he broke the rules at LSU and the State of New Jersey.
If somebody has a problem, I hope they get the help they need, and turn their lives around.
But as Chad Pennington once said, “It’s a privilege” to be in the NFL. So to me, while I hope people get help if they need it, the NFL teams aren’t half-way houses. Plenty of guys out there with the act together who want to play. Jamal Adams should be the template for what you are looking for.
Late in the season, during a practice week, Todd Bowles said that Robinson didn’t practice a particular day because he was away dealing with a personnel matter. Then Robinson was inactive for the Jets’ last game. Now we know the story behind these two newsy items.
Stop trying catch lightening in a bottle, and act like, “We’re the ones who can turn this guy around.”
There are plenty of really talented players out there, who have their stuff together, and would love to play in the NFL.
Stop trying to be geniuses and try to turn around people with issues.
Will the Jets keep Robinson?
Probably, they gave up a fifth-round pick for him, and Maccagnan probably won’t want to look bad by wasting a pick like that.
Teams often worry about things look instead of doing the right thing.
And this incident happened in December. It’s not a new story.
And he’s still with the Jets.
