Dan checks in with a truckload of notes including items on Dion Jordan, Johnthan Banks, Darrelle Revis and more. Here were go . . .
Johnthan Banks (that isn’t a type in his first name, that is how he spells it) ran a 4.61 forty. That is going to hurt him. He was battling Xavier Rhodes and Desmond Trufant for that #2 cornerback in the draft. Both of those guys ran well.
I don’t know if this had anything to do with his poor time, but Banks was sick at the combine. When I interviewed him with a few other reporters, he was worn out, was sniffling and had flu-type symptoms. He told us he was sick.
Some team is going to steal this kid in the second or third round. He’s 6-2, and has very good ball skills (16 career picks at Mississippi State) . . .
I saw Dion Jordan a couple of times at the Indy Airport yesterday. At first, I didn’t know who he was. I saw this slender guy, about 6-6, 6-7, with sweats on, and honestly, I thought maybe he was an NBA player
Then I figured out who he was, when his Oregon teammate, LB Kiko Alonso, who was sitting near me, addressed him as “Dion” when he walked by.
Clearly Jordan needs to get bigger, but people close to him will tell you his labrum injury prevented him from lifting weights enough, and this hurt his ability to put on weight. He’s having surgery in the next few days.
At the combine, he looked very, very athletic, running 4.53, and looking so smooth running around the cones.
He looks like the second coming of Jason Taylor.
The Jets will look long and hard at him with the ninth pick . . .
Manish Mehta was very hard on Jets owner Woody Johnson in his column today about the Darrelle Revis’ situation.
“Johnson appears to have prioritized paper green over Gang Green for the 2013 season, which would not sit well with disillusioned PSL holders at MetLife Stadium,” Mehta wrote.
It remains to be seen if Johnson spends a lot of money this year, but in his defense, the Jets’ awful cap situation, due to some ill-advised contracts, is going to preclude his club from spending a lot of money, even if they want to.
But it’s unfair to accuse Johnson of being cheap if he doesn’t extend Revis (and that Mehta quote was from a column about Revis).
Reportedly, Revis wants a contract in the neighborhood of $16 million a year, and he’s coming off a serious knee injury. Would any of you give him that kind of money coming off a torn ACL? I don’t know, that’s a tough one. I’d would want to see how he bounces back this season before investing that kind of money . . .
Oklahoma offensive tackle Lane Johnson was a junior college quarterback, and then moved on to the Sooners where they had him as a tight end.
Then there was an injury at right tackle, and Bob Stoops asked him if he wanted to play tackle, and he said, “no.”
But eventually he agreed, and it certainly worked out well.
He’s likely a Top-10 pick. If he slips to nine, the Jets should jump on him, and play him at right tackle, the position he played his entire junior season.
This guy is an athletic freak.
“His 40-yard dash time was faster than Anquan Boldin,” said Mike Mayock. “His vertical at 34 inches was the same as A.J. Green – think about this, this is an offensive tackle at 300-plus pounds. He jumped the same as A.J. Green and his broad jump at nine feet, 10 inches was the same as Steven Ridley. Think about those three things for a 300-pound offensive tackle and put that in perspective of what he can be.”
Speaking of athletic freaks, how about 6-8, 275-pound DE Margus Hunt (pictured above) running a 4.6 forty. He might make a nice third round consideration for the Jets if he slips there, which could happen because he’s very raw.
