The Jets secondary didn’t get off to a great start in the team’s opener, but it wasn’t all bad – Joe Flacco had 18 incompletions and a 62.2 quarterback rating.
On Baltimore’s second possession, tight end Todd Heap beat Dwight Lowery on a crossing route that gained 16 yards. Lowery didn’t have any help on this play because there was a heavy blitz that didn’t get there.
Another example of a blitz that didn’t get there, that comprised coverage, was in the fourth quarter – Drew Coleman and Kyle Wilson blitzed, didn’t get get there, and Anquan Boldin was wide open on crossing route for a gain of 15 yards on third down.
Matching up Jim Leonhard with Heap probably wasn’t a great idea because the tight end has seven inches and about 50 pounds on the Jets safety. On third-and-three, on the Ravens second possession, Heap beat Leonhard on a quick slant for a gain of six.
In the fourth quarter, Leonhard was beat for a 35-yard gain down the left seam. It was a beautiful diving catch.
One guy who did get the job done against Heap was Kyle Wilson, who had a tremendous PD on the tight end in the end zone on a deep pass down the left seam.
Eric Smith was beat by Todd Heap on third-and-five, for a gain of six, at the beginning of the second half.
Antonio Cromartie had perfect coverage on Heap on a fade route in the fourth quarter.
In the second quarter, Cro was called for a pass interference on Derrick Mason down the left side. He fell for a good fake by the crafty receiver, and had to make up for a lot of ground, and ended up grabbing his jersey. Late third quarter, Cro was called for interference again, this time on Boldin. It was a chippy call, but it did move the Ravens from the one to six-yard line, giving them breathing room.
Late in the first half, on a pass to Boldin on the left side, Cro had an interception and returned it 66 yards. It seemed like the Ravens were picking on Cro which really doesn’t make a lot sense with his talent level, even though he’s inconsistent.
Late in the first half, “Cro” had perfect coverage deep down the left side to T.J. Houshmanzedeh.
Boldin beat Wilson down the left sideline for a gain of 17 in the middle of the third quarter. Wilson was beat by Boldin in the third quarter for a gain of 38. After the play, Leonhard was motioning like Dwight Lowery was supposed to help on this play,
Wilson had a pretty PD over the middle on a pass to Housh in the second quarter.
James Ihedigbo pressured Flacco to threw to his fullback too quickly in the end zone, and the pass was incomplete. The FB was wide open, so with another second to throw, this would have been a touchdown.
