New Jersey – It’s time to empty the notebook from the OTA practice from Wednesday, June 8 . . .
One thing is pretty apparent from watching the OTA’s so far – Ryan Fitzpatrick is the Jets’ best option at quarterback.
The other three guys have had their moments, but they aren’t on Fitz’s level in terms of reading defenses, pocket presence and knowing Chan Gailey’s offense on the highest level possible.
Look, I’m not saying the Jets should overpay Fitz. Mike Maccagnan learned a lesson about overpaying last off-season when you are bidding against yourself.
But they can certainly sweeten the offer from the current offer – three years for $24 million with $15 million in guarantees. Hey get the deal up to $18 million guaranteed over three years, and there is a good chance this gets done . . .
Both Jets rookie punters, Tom Edwards and Lach Edwards, are both quite adept and at spinning the ball in such a way, that is consistently spins backwards, instead of into the end zone.
I know all punters try to do this, but since both of these guys started football late (right before college), they were taught from the get-go how to spin the ball right. It wasn’t like they were a lot of American high school punts who just kick the ball as far as they can. These guy were spin doctors from the get-go.
So whoever the Jets pick, expect some excellent numbers inside the 20 . . .
The Jets punt returners got a good feel for what it’s like fielding punts in MetLife Stadium. The winds were swirling like crazy on the Jets’ Florham Park practice field.
Rookie free agent running back Romar Morris dropped one.
On a human level, I feel bad for rookie free agent receiver Jalin Marshall. He continues to struggle holding on to the ball.
He struggled catching punt, and he dropped a deep pass.
As a receiver, he’s got that bad habit of jumping right before he catches the ball, whether he needs to or not.
That is usually a sign of a player not confident in his hands.
The guy has special ability in the open field with the ball in his hands, but if he doesn’t start to catch the ball better, whether it’s as a receiver or returner, we aren’t going to see that ability. The last two weeks in OTA’s, he didn’t help himself . . .
Rookie free agent Claude Pelon was never able to truly show his wares in college football due to transcript issues and injuries, but the former USC Trojan is flashing in the OTA’s. He is like a poor man’s Sheldon Richardson, a freakish athlete for a 6-3, 300-pounder.
The son of Haitian immigrants in Orlando, he signed with Florida State out of high school, but his transcript was rejected because we went to one of those high school’s known as “a diploma mill.” He bounced around the JUCO ranks, and then as a senior at USC, he hurt his knee.
If this guy can get any momentum going, he could turn into something. There is no shortage of talent here.
He had a really nice play in practice on Wednesday, overwhelming center Kyle Friend and stopping a runner in the back field.
