Premium – It’s time for a truckload of practice Whispers from Jets Confidential publisher Dan Leberfeld who is up in Cortland for Jets’ training camp . . .
IK Enemkpali might be a little short for OLB, and lack ideal speed, but the guy makes plays.
In today’s practice, he blocked a Matt Simms pass, stopped running back Darryl Richardson in the backfield, blew by a backup LT (not sure who it was – missed the number) to get a QB pressure in the line drill.
Here is the deal with this guy – while he lacks good speed, and is a little stiff athletically, he’s very bright (most Nigerian prospects are), very instinctive, very tough and has a great motor.
You could not walk away from today’s practice without being impressed with the guy . . .
You have to give Stephen Hill a lot of credit. He blocks out all the hate, and just forges ahead. He had another good practice today. He had a long gain on a bubble screen from Geno Smith. He also had a nice play down the right sideline, where he showed great physicality, winning a battle with Dimitri Patterson for the ball.
I will say this for him – he’s a great kid, who is working his tail off, and giving it everything he’s got.
And doing a good job of blocking out the white noise . . .
David Harris had a pretty PD over the middle today.
It’s time for his partner in crime in the middle to get a few of these.
DeMario Davis needs to step up in coverage – just not seeing a lot there.
And Nick Bellore is having a terrific camp.
Now, I don’t see Davis losing his job to Bellore because Rex is so loyal, sometimes to his detriment.
But in Bellore, I see a player who deserves some snaps on defense. He has really good instincts and is always around the ball when he gets reps in practice . . .
Watching Dee Ford return kicks is fun – he’s so gifted at it, with his world class speed, cutting ability and his knack for setting up blockers. If he can stay healthy, he’s going to help the Jets win some games this year . . .
I saw Jace Amaro right in front of me, stumble as he right knee buckled. It just gave out of him.
Amaro said he should be ready for Tuesday’s practice.
This is likely is a wear-and-tear injury based on the NFL schedule for prospects. This is a kid who has gone non-stop after a full season of college football, the combine, team workouts, Jets OTA’s and mini-camps and now training camp. The NFL might want to re-visit their off-season schedule for rookies. They are wearing some of these kids out . . .
Jermaine Cunningham certainly looks the part of a 3-4 OLB at 6-3, 255 pounds, but there is something missing.
Today watching him getting locked by rookie free agent tackle Brett Qvale, made me realize one of the issues is that he just doesn’t get to the quarterback enough. I think New England thought they would get more out of him as a pass rusher, and didn’t and moved on . . .
Speaking of pass rushing outside linebackers, Trevor Reilly showed a nice spin move in a line drill, getting by reserve tackle Ben Ijalana. At 26, Reilly is wise beyond many rookies . . .
