There was an SB Nation story saying Rex wanted to fire Marty during the season, and the Jets are dysfunctional. Let’s take a closer look . . .
“I would deny that I’m looking to fire Marty or anybody,” said Ryan.
That is part of the problem.
I don’t think he was looking for fire Marty, nor should he, but as I’ve mentioned before, as much as it pains me to write it, this staff needs some improvements.
There is too much cronyism. Also, they seem to go cheap last off-season in filling staff openings. This is New York. You need to go out and hire the best coaching staff humanly possible, with no spending limit. Remember, there is no salary cap on coaches, so take advantage of that fact.
Honestly, at some positions, this team wasn’t coached as well as it could have been. I will leave it at that.
This is an interesting quote from Rex – “I’m not saying it wasn’t said by somebody, but it certainly wasn’t said by me or thought by me.”
So perhaps somebody did say it.
“It is reported from interviews with Jets management, players and league sources who requested anonymity,” wrote this SB nation writer leading into his story about how the Jets are dysfunction and how Rex wanted to fire Marty during the season.
It’s interesting because this reporter is rarely around the team.
One part of the story that wasn’t accurate is that Rex continues to be blitz-happy even though he doesn’t have the cornerbacks to hold up on an island.
“There is emphasis among the Jets management and players on both Ryan’s and Mornhinweg’s failures to adjust this season,” wrote the SB Nation writer. “Ryan for not backing off more on his blitzes to cover for his depleted and challenged cornerbacks, first, and secondary overall.”
That’s not true.
He’s dialed back his blitzing a great deal, replacing it with more stunts and twists up front.
As for the locker room.
“I’ll tell you this, this locker room, as close as this group is and as tight as this group is, players, coaches,” Ryan said.
I totally agree. I’m amazed by it considering all the loses. This isn’t a dysfunctional locker room. The guys truly get along.
So is there any dysfunction in the building?
“Not dysfunction to me,” Ryan said. “If it’s somebody’s opinion, its somebody’s opinion.
I don’t like the dysfunction thing or whatever it is because I think that’s ridiculous. What’s dysfunctional might be the record.”
Is there any dysfunction?
Yes, regarding the quarterback situation, and how John Idzik has handled it.
He forced a second-round project on the coaches, and he’s started the majority of the games the last two years, and that has had a major impact on the results.
Also, they had a faux QB competition throughout the spring and summer. Right there, that reeks of dysfunction.
You know darn well Marty would want to start Vick.
But he’s doing what he’s told.
So yes, there is dysfunction regarding the handling of the quarterback position, the most important position on any team.
It’s hard to win with bad quarterback play. The Jets are the NFL’s 32nd ranked passing offense.
But to me, that is where the dysfunction begins and ends.
