What he’s saying about what the Jets could get
in return for Sam Darnold is flat incredible and they should jump at it.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter announced on the “Haberman and Middlekauf Show” that the Jets should be able to get a late first-round pick for Darnold.
“I headed into the offseason thinking they would get a second-round pick and maybe something else for him,” Schefter said. “I thought that would be his value if they decided to trade him. I think with all the movement going on, I think with what Matthew Stafford went for, I think his value, in then, again if they trade him, will be some sort of late one. That’s my sense and belief.
“Do I think they’re getting a top-10 pick for Sam Darnold? No. Do I think that they could get a first-round pick, a later first-round pick? Yes.”
If Douglas could pull this off – wow, just wow.
To get a first-round pick for a quarterback coming off a season where, in 12 starts, he threw nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions, with a 72.7 quarterback rating, that is quite an accomplishment.
To get a first-round pick for a QB with a career completion percentage of 59.8 is pretty darn good. It’s hard to win consistently with that kind of completion percentage because too many passes are hitting the ground. It’s difficult to sustain drives that way.
Anybody who would have told me over the course of this season, that the Jets would be able to get a late first-round pick for the player, considering how much he struggled reading defenses and with accuracy, I would have told them they were pulling my leg.
Look, I’m looking to be flippant or disrespect the player, but as Bill Parcells always used to say, “I go but what I see, fellas.”
If the Jets can get a first-round pick for the quarterback we’ve watched the last three years, they need to accept the offer with no hesitation.
People might way, “Well if they trade him now, who is going to replace him?”
Well obviously, they will pick a QB in the draft, likely in the first round, but honestly, that point is kind of secondary now, and I will tell you why.
Whether it’s in free agency or the draft, at the very least, you can find somebody who will put up the same numbers as Darnold. That wouldn’t be heavy-lifting.
The Jets should jump through hoops for this kind of offer, not only because the suitor would probably be overpaying, but because it would give the Jets three first-round picks in 2021, and that would allow them to potentially fill three big needs – like edge-rusher, #1 cornerback and, of, course, quarterback. And with the cap going down, teams are looking for this kind of draft capital, because you get players at reasonable salaries, that are locked up for at least four years, maybe five, if you pick up the fifth-year option.
One of the reasons the Jets could possible get a late one for Darnold is there are so many NFL teams desperate for quarterbacks.
So if a team shows that level of desperation, and is willing to give up a first-round pick for Darnold, the Jets need to be all over that.
