It’s time for a helping of Jets Confidential Website Whispers, including notes on Woody Johnson, Mike Goodson and Mark Sanchez . . .
At the NFL owner’s meeting today in Boston, Woody Johnson said that the Jets are about “Truth, justice and the American way,” regarding Mike Goodson’s legal issues.
Quoting Superman might not have been ideal, but that is how Woody rolls, and clearly the Jets powers-that-be aren’t going to stop him.
He means well, but he doesn’t help himself, or his team, by making statements like that.
This has turned into a running gag all over the internet today, with people having fun with their Superman references, like referring to Woody’s coach as Lex Ryan.
If I were Woody I would handle things like fellow billionaire Paul Allen, the owner of the Seattle Seahawks, who rarely talks to the media.
That is a sound approach – let you President, GM and coach doing the talking – that is part of why you pay them the big bucks.
Woody, why do you need the aggravation?
Reporters are constantly going out there way to make you look bad.
Why give them ammo?
You are a good man.
Do yourself a favor, pull the plug on the media stuff, aside from major announcements.
Enjoy your team away from the media spotlight.
I think you will like it even more . . .
Speaking of “truth, justice and the American way,” did that apply to Cliff Harris and Claude Davis?
“They didn’t care about truth, justice and the American way with Harris and Davis,” said one Jets beat writer.
And honestly, Harris and Davis were charged with less severe crimes than Goodson.
Harris and Davis were waived on April 30, 2013 after being arrested and charged with possession of marijuana.
Goodson was arrested for unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of a handgun, possession of a hollow-point bullet, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Harris and Davis charges looks like petty larceny compared to what Goodson is dealing with.
Harris and Davis were waived immediately after their arrests, and with Goodson, the Jets are about “truth, justice and the American way.”
Like I mentioned the other day, there are significant double standards in the world of sports. That is obvious. I pointed out that even a strict disciplinarian like Bill Parcells gave a troubled player, Lawrence Taylor, chance after chance, because he could help the Giants a great deal.
The Jets value Goodson a lot more than they did Harris and Davis, two longshots, who would have had to jump through hoops to make the team.
So the bottom line is this – “truth, justice and the American way for core players and priority free agents (Goodson’s category) and priority draft picks.”
While it’s not a great life lesson, it’s a reality in sports.
And it’s why so many standout athletes never truly learn their lesson, because they generally get more lives than a cat.
Just look at Santonio Holmes . . .
I saw a scouting report recently that certainly applies to Mark Sanchez.
The report was detailing a quarterback who needed to “stop making his receivers works so hard,” for the football.
This is something Sanchez needs to improve on – ball placement, because in the West Coast offense accuracy is huge, since running after the catch is a calling card of this system. And if you aren’t accurate with the football, it hurts a target’s ability to run after the catch.
