I’m don’t want to go too overboard because this isn’t tackle football,
but QB Mike White did some good things again today, especially on one drive at the end of practice, marching the team down the field, throwing with good anticipation, like on the first throw of the drive to WR Jehu Chesson, throwing as he was cutting out of his break, and then hit WR Braxton Berrios, TE Ross Travis, and then Berrios again in the back of the end zone for a TD.
What he did on this drive, was make quick, decisive decisions, and like I said, did a nice job throwing with anticipation. He looks like a belongs.
The big question is would he do this in real games, with real opponents, and tackling/sacks. This is flag football out here.
But in practice, he looks like he’s made great strides, and has the talent to play in the league. He is 6-5, 230 with a great arm . . .
DE Tarrel Bashem hurt his ankle in practice today, so Frankie Luvu got a lot of work, and made a lot of plays. He’s not just flashing as a pass rusher, but as a run defender and has also looked really good in coverage.
In back-to-back plays in this practice, first he stopped a runner in the backfield, and then on the next play, he beat offensive tackle Corbin Kaufusi for a QB pressure. In coverage, he’s consistently in the hip pocket of tight ends.
Luvu looks like he’s ready to have a break-out year if they give him more PT. He’s very athletic and has a great motor . . .
Marcus Maye said today:
“There are no egos on the team. The vibe is good,” Maye said.
It’s possible he was talking about Jamal Adams, but we will never know. There is no way he would admit to such a thing.
But as for the statement Maye made, I do feel that statement is a salient point about their defense. The offense, there are so many new parts, it’s hard to get a feel for their vibe, identity, just yet.
But what I’ve observed about their defense, it’s a group that is buying in, with less agendas. It might not be the most talented unit in the league, but they’re close-knit group who should play good team defense together.
Three Jets defenders, who didn’t seem to totally buy-in to being Jets, are now out of the picture this year – one traded, one cut, and one out for a different reason.
The guys remaining want to be here, and all seem to be buying in . . .
Watching cornerback Bless Austin work over the last week and a half, I’m very impressed with his focus and how hard he works. He is wired right. He is going to do everything in his power to realize his potential . . .
The Jet are pretty loaded at tight end right now, with the return of Ryan Griffin and Daniel Brown, who both entered camp on the injured list. Trevon Wesco is pummeling people as a blocker, and catching basically everything thrown his way, and Ross Travis has looked really good catching the ball this summer. Travis had a great catch today, using his 6-7 frame, and huge wingspan, to snatch the ball over the LB who was in his hip pocket.
Travis, a former Penn State basketball player, looks like a free agent steal. He spent the last couple of season in Indianapolis. He could be quite a weapon in the red zone with his enormous catching radius . . .
Look, I think Mekhi Becton has Pro Bowl potential, but don’t expect him to be Orlando Pace right out of the gate. There are going to be some growing pains. In today’s practice, Jordan Jenkins beat him off the edge to pressure Sam Darnold into an incompletion. Jenkins is a good power rusher, but not necessarily known for bending the edge, so for him to do this to Becton, shows you the rookie tackle has some work to do . . .
