New Jersey – There were no real surprises in the Jets’ cuts to 53. Let’s take a look.
The Jets could have made these cuts before they went to Cortland.
There are no surprises at all.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, 95 percent of these decisions are generally made before camp starts, especially here.
That is why I think it’s just rhetoric when they say they will keep the best 53.
If that was the case, Jay Richardson would be here.
I watched the guy for the entire camp and preseason, and wonder what else he could have don’t to make the team. Not much.
He consistently made plays in practice and camp.
When you look at Josh Bush – what did he do to make the team?
The only play of note I can remember from when was when he got beat for a touchdown in the Carolina game.
I actually thought Donnie Fletcher had a better summer than Bush, but there is no way he was going to beat out a draft pick.
DeMario Davis really didn’t distinguish himself this summer. I’m not saying he won’t in time, but he was underwhelming in the preseason and training camp.
He played most of the game against Philly? Aside from one QB pressure on a blitz, I didn’t see him make a play.
In the same time frame, Garrett McIntyre made seven tackles.
I have to be honest, I know that Davis tests well – 4.52 forty, can lift a ton, but I think his instincts are so-so.
And what did Chaz Schilens do to make the team.
Okay, I get it, he played under Sanjay Lal in Oakland, but he was hardly on the field this summer, which was the same problem he had in Oakland.
Eron Riley was thrown four passes in Philly, and caught them all. What do you want him to do?
Riley can play – he has a nice size-speed ratio, but once Schilens was signed, barring injury, this was over. And why, is Schilens really that good?
Jordan White had a really good summer, but he had that bad drop in Philly, so that probably hurt his case. But you know what, Stephen Hill was dropping passes throughout the summer.
The Jets probably figure, with White’s average size-speed ratio, they can move him to the practice squad. But I think he can help them now. He runs great routes and has excellent hands. I’m not going to hold one drop against him.
But this roster is not set. There are going to be some claims.
Giants tailback D.J. Ware has to interest the Jets. Remember, he started with the Jets, and was a surprising cut by the G-Men.
So basically, there were ZERO surprises today.
Cortland was more to get the anointed players up to speed, not to find new talent.
Maybe this approach will work.
We shall see.
It’s not how I would do it.
