Cortland – It’s time for another interesting, spell-binding dose of Website Whispers live from Cortland. Let’s get it on . . .
The New York Daily News back page – “Tebow Time.”
The back page was supported by an article that speculated on an increased role for Tebow based on one line from Rex Ryan.
“We are open to anything,” Ryan said on Sunday.
And based on this quote, the Daily News decided this meant Tim Tebow could have a bigger role.
“That story was incredibly irresponsible,” chimed in one writer.
As of right now, nothing has changed – Mark Sanchez is the Jets quarterback, and Tebow will come in as a Wildcat quarterback at times.
Rex’s quote didn’t change that.
As much as the Daily News wants this to be a full blown quarterback controversy right now, it’s just not the case . . .
. . .
Mike Westhoff laced into Jordan White during the special team’s part of the practice.
This was old school coaching. He absolutely destroyed the guy for not hitting the right hole on a kick return. F-bombs were flying.
I will just say this, if I were running a football team, I would never have Jordan White returning kicks. He’s not fast enough.
I would absolutely have him on my team as a wide receiver and punt returner – in a heartbeat, but not as a kick returner. It’s a bad fit.
Shortly after the special team’s drill White would love to forget, he had two nice grabs with the first team offense . . .
Westhoff also ripped into DeMario Davis when the guy he was blocking made the stop on a kick return.
I get the sense that Rex wanted this to be tough love day from his coaching staff.
Anthony Lynn was ripping into Joe McKnight during a running back drill.
“Guge” destroyed an offensive lineman for not blocking a linebacker. I’m not sure who it was.
It was rough out there . . .
It looks like Austin Howard could end up in that role as the extra offensive lineman in obvious running situations – the role Wayne Hunter served before entering the starting lineup . . .
We aren’t allowed to comment on the Jets’ Wildcat plays from today, but I will say this – opponents are going to have their hands full. Opposing defensive coaches aren’t going to get a lot of sleep the week they are preparing for the Jets . . .
The Jets passing game was excellent today – the best it’s been all summer, especially in the seven-on-seven drill. They were Brady-like, both Sanchez and Tebow . . .
One of the low-points of practice was when Greg McElroy turned around to hand off to nobody.
Somebody messed up, and I doubt it was McElroy, who scored 48 on the Wonderlic.
“Get back in the G-D huddle,” Sparano demanded . . .
DE Jay Richardson continues to make a lot of plays. He had a QB pressure on Tebow, messing up a play.
This looks like an underrated signing by the Jets’ personnel department. The former Oakland Raider was out of football last year. He’s 6-6, 280 and athletic . . .
I think Stephon Heyer is injured. He hasn’t practiced much in recent, and was seen with the trainers today . . .
Some reporters are upset with Jets player and coach’s secrecy about the Wildcat, and that will be in a lot of stories for tomorrow.
Mark Sanchez was like a parrot today when asked about the Wildcat. He kept saying, “you will have to ask Coach Sparano.”
I think the Jets handling of this is right on target. Why on earth would you want to tip your hand about strategy – ever? . . .
Calvin Pace has refused to do any interviews this summer. Above, Jets PR guy Art Lopez tries to talk him into doing one . . .
