Premium – Reporters and fans need to view quotes through the prism of “consider the source,” and “what do you expect him to say?”
The Jets brass of Woody Johnson, Ira Axselrad, John Idzik and Rex Ryan must be very happy with the team’s right tackle Breno Giacomini.
He has their back.
His comments defending his former Seattle Seahawks teammate Percy Harvin, who the Jets’ brass acquired on Friday, was a big help to the powers-that-be in Florham Park.
But you need to take some of what he said with a grain of salt. Did you expect him to trash Harvin, who his new team just acquired?
In 2014, Harvin had physical altercations with teammates Golden Tate and Doug Baldwin.
“Almost everybody in this locker room has been in a fight before,” said Giacomini. “We play football. You know what I’m saying? Oh, it happened twice. Who cares? He’s a good competitor. That’s what it is. I know it was squashed right away with Golden, because I was there, and I heard the same thing about Doug. I think it’s being blown up. It’s just being blown up for no reason.”
Blown up? Scrums with two teammates in eight months isn’t a big deal? I like Breno. He’s a great guy, but he’s wrong here. It is a big deal.
And throw in the fact that Harvin refused to go back in the game against Dallas a few week ago, and Pete Carroll had seen enough. He and GM John Schneider sent Harvin packing, 18 months after sending premium draft picks to Minnesota to get him. 18 month after giving him a monster contract.
Do you think Carroll and Schneider are stupid? They built a team that won the Super Bowl last season.
They reached their wit’s end with Harvin.
“Some guys, who just don’t get it, had to be shipped recently,” said Pat Kirwan, a host on SiriusXM NFL Radio, who is best friends with Carroll.
But if (a big “if”) the Jets can somehow get Harvin’s anger management issues under control, this trade could turn out to be a steal.
“I love the way he plays,” said Giacomini. “He can be very feisty on the field. He plays angry, which is good. He kind of plays the way I like to play. I think he’s going to fit in fine. I think he’s going to help this team immediately on Sunday (against the Bills). I don’t know why they let him go or whatever.”
Breno you know darn well why they let him go.
But Breno has his new team’s back.
And that is admirable.
Breno’s comments about Harvin’s talent are dead-on. He’s a rare talent.
But Breno knows how smart Carroll and Schneider are.
He knows why they made the trade.
Breno knows two fights in eight months with teammates is a big deal.
Breno knows refusing to go back in a game is a big deal.
So read those particular comments with a grain of salt.
