Florham Park – It’s time for a heaping helping of Training Camp Whispers from Florham Park. Treat yourself. Sign-up now . . .
Todd Bowles described wide receiver Quincy Enunwa as, “not as fluid as the other guys.”
In other words, he has stiff hips.
But Bowles added, “he’s got a big body and he’s tough and he can catch the ball and block.”
I’ve always felt that Enunwa is a good candidate to move to tight end, and based on Bowles description, it certainly sounds like it might make sense . . .
Geno Smith was asked if Chan Gailey is scaling back his offense for him, and responded, “No, he didn’t scale it down – it’s what he runs.”
That is so true.
I talked to a former NFL QB who played for Gailey, and he said Chan likes to keep it simple. And if it’s not simple enough for the guys to grasp, he will make it simpler. The QB said they run about five or six running plays. That’s it . . .
One thing is clear watching practice over the first few days, Antonio Cromartie has lost a step. I’m not saying he can’t be successful. Hey, when you run 4.4, and you slip to 4.5, you are still fast. But there is no doubt, watching him, he doesn’t run as well as he used to . . .
Man does Jets nickel back Buster Skrine get his hands on a lot of footballs.
This looks like it’s going to be a very good signing for the Jets if he can keep the penalties under control. He’s so feisty and aggressive, he can be a little too touchy-feely . . .
The Jets need an edge pass rusher to emerge to be a game-wrecker, and I think the leading candidate is IK Ememkpali. He looked great in the one-on-one drill (offensive lineman vs. pass rushers) in today’s practice. . . .
One area Ryan Fitzpatrick is better than Geno Smith is on hot-reads. He’s very good at finding outlets quickly when he’s blitzed. This is still something Geno needs to work on . . .
Darrelle Revis had some young visitors after practice. Three little girls. I think one was his daughter. And he was doing cartwheels with them. The little girls were having a great time. If Mike Maccagnan saw this, he probably needed lithium. His $39 million corner doing cartwheels.
Good news for Jets fans – he came out of the cartwheel drill in good shape . . .
For those thinking that Bryce Petty could emerge as an option for the Jets in 2015, think again. Today’s practice was a reminder of how much work he needs to do. He threw two quick outs that were picked off and returned for touchdowns. He also fumbled a snap (remember he played in the shotgun in college). I think he can be very good in time, but “time” is the operative word. He’s going to need it . . .
Wide receiver Shaq Evans is having a good camp . . .
Man are the Jets deep at corner. A name that isn’t brought up at all, Curtis Brown, looked good today. He was a 2011 third round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers, out of Texas, who was out of football last year.
The Jets have so much depth at corner, they might be able to trade one of these guys. A lot of teams need help at the position.
