Christopher Johnson taking “longer range outlook”

What is Christopher Johnson worldview on free agent spending?

“We’ll do things in a measured, active, way,” Johnson said after the season. “Will we spend to the limit trying to win this year and throw it all in there? The idea is to win year after year, to be like one of those great franchises that seem to go from year-to-year to-year and they are there for a decade. We want to be in that conversation. I don’t think you do that by over-spending on a couple of free agents that will only last you a moment in that longer range outlook.”

Does that sound like a guy who would spend, let’s say between $25-27 million-a-year, on free agent QB Kirk Cousins?

Maybe.

Because he did say that, “I don’t think you do that by over-spending on a couple of free agents that will only last you a moment.”

But if you sign a quarterback for big money in free agency, it’s usually done for more than “a moment.”

It would be a long-term deal with the intent of that player being on your team for at least 3-5 years.

So while Johnson doesn’t want to spend recklessly, if you sign the right quarterback, in a quarterback-driven league, there is nothing reckless about that.

Because it’s hard to be successful in the NFL without a legitimate answer at quarterback.
