New Jersey – Time for another edition of Friday Night Jets Whispers. A few different Jets items to get into today, so let’s get this underway . . .
When Austin Seferian-Jenkins was released by Tampa Bay, general manager Jason Licht claimed it was “the right decision” at the time.
This week, the Buccaneers signed wide recceiver Josh Huff to their practice squad. Huff was recently released by the Philadelphia Eagles after being arrested on gun and pot possession charges.
Buccaneers coach Dirk Koetter was asked if there is a double standard at work. Why sign Huff, after releasing Austin Seferian-Jenkins following a DUI?
“It’s very complex — much more complex than you even know. Much more complex than you know,” Koetter said. “There’s more to every story than meets the eye. There’s more than I’m ever going to say, probably more than the GM’s ever going to say. I wouldn’t compare them. It’s not apples to apples, if I was you. That’s just my advice. Take it for what it’s worth.”
In other words, in the eyes of Koetter and Licht, Seferian-Jenkins is more of a problem than Huff.
Time will tell. Seferian-Jenkins has had two DUI’s in his life, one in college and one in Tampa Bay.
The Jets took a chance on Erin Henderson who had a drinking problem, and it didn’t work out.
Henderson is an alcoholic who attended AA meetings.
It’s never come out that Seferian-Jenkins has that issue.
So far, ASJ has been on very good behavior. We will see how this story ends.
I just thought I’d share what Koetter said – challenging the Tampa Bay media not to compare Huff to Seferian-Jenkins . . .
My guesstimate on Thursday turned out to be wrong. Darron Lee is going to play this week.
While no injury is a good thing, there are a couple of silver-linings to Lee missing the last three games.
First off, he’s less likely to hit the rookie wall, which usually happens around Week 12-13 when the college season ends. Not playing for three weeks, was good for his rookie body (aside from the ankle, which is now okay).
Secondly, after being rushed into action, and learning on the job for the first six games, he was able step back, see the forest for the trees, and this has helped him mentally.
When I asked him about this today, I could tell from his answer, he totally bought my premise.
“[Watching the last three games] has definitely helped me mentally,” Lee said. “The game has slowed down for me.”
Lee is very, very bright, and during his time away from the field, he’s advanced a great deal mentally. I expect big things from him down the stretch . . .
I spoke to Jets right tackle Brent Qvale (neck) today and he said he’s ready to return on Sunday. I would not be surprised if Qvale plays some for Breno Giacomini at right tackle. First of all, Giacomini is dealing with a shoulder injury. Secondly, Giacomini is coming off a rough game.
Qvale’s neck injury was kind of scary for the Nebraska product. He was blocking an Arizona pass rusher, and guy fell unexpectedly, and Qvale thrust forward and his head went right into the ground, injuring his neck. It was a disc injury . . .
Expect a monster game from Mo Wilkerson this week.
He was embarrassed this week – the whole story about him being late for meetings/walk throughs – after signing a monster contract. And then a couple of days ago, Daily News writer Manish Mehta wrote a column destroying, much like he destroyed Darrelle Revis.
Mo has a lot to prove this week a lot. When you combine being a transcendent talent with tremendous motivation, usually good things happen. Plus, the Rams have a very average offensive line.
