Funny moment in camp:
Jets safety Will Parks got called for PI on a pass down the right sideline to tight end C.J. Uzomah.
On the sideline where the flag was thrown was Adam “Pacman” Jones, who was at practice with Brandon Marshall and LeSean McCoy, to do interviews for their podcast – “I am Athlete.”
After the play, Parks went over to Jones, a long-time NFL cornerback, and asked him what he did wrong on the play . . .
Max Mitchell has the potential to start at right tackle at some point, but probably not early in the season, and we saw one of the reasons today in practice.
It’s well-documented coming out of Louisiana-Lafayette, he needed to get stronger. Robert Saleh said that in the spring.
“His area of focus is going to be adding strength and power to his game,” Saleh said. “Once he’s able to do that where he can hunker down and anchor versus those bull rushes, he’s got a chance to be a pretty darn good football player.”
You saw an example of that today when Jets defensive end Bryce Huff pushed him back, blowing up the pocket, and Joe Flacco had to leave the pocket.
This guy has starting potential at right tackle, but probably not right now because he needs to get stronger and hone his technique. But no doubt this guy has a good chance to vie for the starting right tackle job in time.
“It’s going to be a little bit different when you’re dealing with power rushes from an (NFL) defensive line,” Saleh said. “He’s got a chance to be really special.” . . .
Speaking of right tackle, as I’ve written before Chuma Edoga is a perfect fit for the Jets’ zone blocking scheme, light on his feet, long arms, but he needs to be more consistent.
Today, Huff got by him to pressure Zach Wilson, who had to leave the pocket.
Look, you are going to get beat, but if Edoga is going to the Jets’ answer at right tackle this year, he needs to get beat less and be more consistently reliable.
We will see what the Jets do here at right tackle. A name that comes up a lot in trade speculation is Philadelphia’s backup offensive tackle Andre Dillard, a 2019 first-round pick, when Joe Douglas was with the Eagles.
The Eagles didn’t pick up his fifth-year option, so they might want to get something for him now, instead of just losing him for nothing after the season in free agency . . .
The Jets offense started today’s practice with a lot of quick throws. It’s possible they did this after having protection issues on Tuesday, and not getting a lot done in the passing game. They were more productive today with this quick throw approach . . .
We were talking before about a rookie who needs to get a little bigger and stronger, and this might not only apply to Mitchell, but also defensive end Jermaine Johnson.
While he was pretty good at setting the edge against the run in college, the NFL is a different animal, and he needs some work in this area on the pro level.
There was a run to the right side today where Bam Knight took the edge on him . . .
Like a lot of teams, the Jets play music during practice.
Aside from some players liking it, another reason for loud music in practice is to create noise, since they play in loud stadiums.
But one observer wondered if it’s a great idea to play certain music if there are kids in the stands. There are risque lyrics in some of these songs. Some words are bleeped out.
Not criticizing this genre, just pointing out that some wonder if it’s ideal for teams to play certain tunes with kids around.
Now there were no fans in the stands today, but there were players’ families, with some kids.
Tuesday was an open practice with a lot of kids there . . .
One thing about the Jets’ offense is there is a lot of motion that can mess up a defense, and you saw a play like that today. I’m not going to get into many details of the play, but due to the motion, and a great fake, Elijah Moore was wide open on the short right side, caught the ball and ran for a long gain.
The defense went for the “eye candy” as they say.
