This is a big year for Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood.
He’s in the last year of his rookie contract, a four-year deal for $3.8 million.
His first three seasons have been a little up and down, including suffering a torn Achilles as a rookie.
He has flashed at times in camp this summer. He now seems totally comfortable in his linebacker skin, after playing safety at Auburn.
Sherwood had a couple standout plays today, including one in run support, and had nice coverage on tight end Zach Ertz on a deep-out throw from Jayden Daniels on a bootleg that fell incomplete.
“He’s a hell of a linebacker,” said Jets coach Robert Saleh.
He could be. Let’s see what he does this season, and if he does well, he could set himself up for a nice payday, with the Jets or elsewhere . . .
Watching today’s Jets-Commanders practice in Florham Park, it’s pretty obvious the Jets have more talent than Washington.
This is understandable. The Jets are essentially in Year 4 of a rebuild, and the Commanders are in Year 1. The Jets have a stronger roster.
And with that being said, it will be interesting to see if a few players on the Jets’ bubble caught the eye of Washington GM Adam Peters and coach Dan Quinn in practice.
Last year, when the Jets practiced against the Carolina in Spartanburg, South Carolina, a bubble player caught the eye of the Panthers brass – LB Claudin Cherulus. When the Jets waived Cherulus, the Panthers claimed him on waivers, and he’s been on the team ever since.
Don’t be shocked if this happens again with the Commanders. These practices give personnel guys and coaches a birds-eye view of another team’s players in practice . . .
Two promising rookies had one of the better plays in today’s Jets practice, when rookie QB Andrew Peasley hit WR Malachi Corley on an out route. The coverage wasn’t bad on this play, but Peasley threw it early, and with such great timing and precision, that got by the corner, and Corley made a nice grab.
I’m not putting Peasley in Canton, but I like how he sees the field, goes through his progressions, and doesn’t play scared . . .
QB Adrian Martinez had a nice bootleg pass where he rolled out and hit Brandon Smith on an out route.
Smith and Isaiah Winstead are two receivers from the UFL the Jets recently signed, and both look the part at around 6-3, 215.
While there is a QB shortage in pro football now, in terms of true answers, there is no shortage of receivers. If you watched the UFL, you saw that that fledgling league had some really good pass catchers, and the Jets nabbed two of them . . .
Jets second-year edge-rusher Will McDonald had one of his best plays of the summer, scorching Commanders veteran left tackle Cornelius Lucas for a QB pressure on Jayden Daniels. McDonald looked like he was shot out of a cannon on this play, and it looked like he surprised Lucas with his speed off the edge . . .
How did Washington rookie QB Daniels look today?
Well, early in practice, in a seven-on-seven drill, he threw a pretty deep pass down the right sideline that was hauled in by WR Dyami Brown, over the outstretched arms of cornerback D.J. Reed.
But aside from that, he was kind of pedestrian, and looked like a rookie.
Not sure what Dan Quinn is going to do in Week 1 of the regular season. Daniels needs work, and they have a patchwork offensive line. Do you want to put a skinny rookie out there behind that line in Week 1? . . .
One of the better plays by a Jets defensive tackle today was Javon Kinlaw beating Commanders center Mike Deiter for a QB pressure in the red zone, forcing Marcus Mariota to take off scrambling . . .
Jets WR Mike Williams (pictured above) took the field for practice the first time today coming off a knee injury from last year, and looked comfortable planting and cutting in a receiver drill.
