Premium – Dan checks in with a heaping helping of notes and Whispers from the Jets-Packers game. A lot to get into. Let’s go . . .
People were making a big deal about Derek Sherrod starting for Brian Bulaga at right tackle, and how bad this was for the Packers. For goodness sake, he was a first round pick in 2011. He’s not a slouch. He has talent, but has had injury issues. It’s not like they had an undrafted rookie free agent out there . . .
CB Demetri Goodson was inactive today for the Packers. Do you know who that is? Mike Goodson’s brother . . .
As we said during the week, Randall Cobb against Kyle Wilson is a problem – On that drive at the end of the hal, he had a big play in the middle of the drive, and then the touchdown catch . . .
Jason Babin’s late hit on Aaron Rodgers was a killer on that late first half Packers touchdown drive. At 34, Babin is not as athletic as he used to be, is a little stiff, and doesn’t have the control over his body that he used to, and that was evident when he went flying into Rodgers . . .
One reason the Jets couldn’t run today was because Green Bay didn’t respect their passing game and stacked the box . . .
What happened to the limited role for Dee Milliner? He’s not 100 percent. He looked slow and was hobbling. It was astonishing that the Jets would have Milliner covering Nelson on an island. This is a player who has been out of month, and didn’t practice until this week, and that was on a limited basis.
And when you saw him run after Nelson following the catch, he looked like a defensive lineman running, clearly nowhere near his normal self.
The Jets should never have put him in that position.
That was a major coaching error. Let him cover Jarrett Boykin, not Jordy Nelson on an island . .
Jordy Nelson is good, but not nine catches for 209 yards good. He’s a very, very good #2 receiver. To allow him to do what he did today is embarrassing . . .
I know he has a lot of his plate with kick returning and all the other special teams work he does, but the Jets need to start using Saalim Hakim at receiver. Right now, they have nobody who scares any defense deep, and this hurt their running game today, and will moving forward. The Jets need a player who can blow the top off a defense to take the safety out of the box . . .
Brian Winters continues to struggle with quick defensive tackles. Mike Daniels gave him fits today . . .
A fan said to me today after the time-out that negated the touchdown pass, “That could only happen to the Jets.”
No, it could happen to every team in the league.
This concept that things happen to the Jets, that don’t happen to other teams, is a myth and childish . . .
Marty Morhninweg didn’t address the media after the game. He wasn’t made available by the organization. He is available once a week, every Thursday. From a PR and mental standpoint, they should make him available tomorrow for 5-10 minutes, and get this time-out debacle out of the way. It’s a really bad idea for him to be rehashing this on Thursday, when all attention should be on the Chicago Bears.
