Florham Park – Let’s get into some of the interesting stuff that went on today at Jets Training Camp in New Jersey. Let’s go . . .
So how will the responsibilities of the defensive linemen change going from Rex to Todd Bowles?
Bowles looks for the players to get up field more and penetrate.
So it’s kind of a hybrid defense, because so often 3-4 ends need to stay at home and tie up blockers, freeing other players up to make plays.
Bowles allows his defensive line to shoot up field more . . .
A guy who has been kind of under the radar in Jets camp this summer has been Jets fifth round pick, guard Jarvis Harrison.
So how is he doing?
Today in a one-on-one line drill, he got torched by rookie free agent Davon Walls, also a very, very raw player.
So this shows you how much work he has to do.
If this was Sheldon Richardson beating him this soundly, that is one thing, but Walls, a rookie out of Lincoln University, that is another matter.
Harrison is very, very raw and likely bound for the practice squad . . .
I don’t mean this to be disrespectful or flippant, just an honest observation – if another cornerback, less high-profile, was getting beat as much as Antonio Cromartie in camp, they would likely would be released when the cuts are made.
For instance, in the 7-on-7 drill today, Cromartie got beat soundly, on two plays in a row, by Eric Decker, on square-in type routes.
Cromartie said after practice that he’s working on things to get ready for the regular season.
Look, he’s not getting cut. And I’m not saying he should be cut. I’m just making an observation.
If DaShaun Phillips, Keith Lewis or Keon Lyn got beat this much, they might have been cut already.
The proof will be in the pudding once the regular season starts . . .
All week the Jets have had a player wearing #71 with gold numbers in practice. So they are game-planning a little for their second preseason game. #71 is Atlanta Falcon outside linebacker Kroy Biermann. The interesting thing is that it’s the only opposing jersey any Jets player is wearing. Usually on a scout team, there are a myriad of guys wearing opposing jerseys to simulate opponents . . .
Quinton Coples has had a very quiet camp. I haven’t noticed him a lot. Today, I noticed him when D’Brickashaw Ferguson looked him up a nice run by Zac Stacy off left tackle.
Once again, the proof will be in the pudding once the season starts. I’m just saying he’s been somewhat quiet . . .
I saw Sheldon Richardson getting extra tape applied to his left wrist during practice. The left wrist has been a problem for him most of camp, and it’s impacting his performance a little because it hurts his shedding ability . . .
Really smart move by Mike Maccagnan to bringing in QB Matt Flynn, while he’s still rehabbing a hamstring, so he can continue his rehab in Florham Park, but get a head start on learning the Jets’ system, and opposed to waiting until he was 100 percent, and then bringing him in . . .
Wide receiver Walter Powell is having a really, really good camp. He’s running good routes and catching everything in sight. He’s so quick in-and-out of his breaks, that he constantly gains separation by cutting away from defensive backs. His quickness and elusiveness in the open field, make him a prime candidate to run reverses. And obviously he’s a good kick returner as well, as you saw on his 48-yard return in Detroit last Thursday.
Really nice pickup by the former regime.
