The Jets will have temporary layoffs (furloughs) if there is a work stoppage, but will the Giants? . . Also, is right tackle a good fit for Vlad Ducasse? Dan covers these issues and other topics . . .
If there is a lockout, the Jets are going to have furloughs. However, the Giants will not force their workers to take any time off.
Two years ago, when the economy collapsed, the Jets had their workers take a two week furlough, but the Giants didn’t.
None of us have access to the Jets and Giants books (as much as the union would love to take a look at them), but I find it hard to believe that the Giants’ owners have more money than Woody Johnson.
But it’s hard to pass judgment without seeing the books . . .
Mike Bloomgren is leaving the Jets to become the offensive line/running game coach at Stanford.
While most people have never heard of Bloomgren, he was the heir apparent to Brian Schottenheimer as the team’s offensive coordinator.
The Jets figured they needed to be grooming an “offensive coordinator of the future” in case Schottenheimer landed a head coaching job. Bloomgren was that guy.
With B-Schotty’s heading coaching prospects cooling a little, Bloomgren figured he needed to take the next step, and the Stanford job allowed him to do that . . .
It was reported this week, by Rich Cimini, that Vlad Ducasse’s future is likely at right tackle, not left guard.
While Ducasse has more of an upside than Matt Slauson, Slauson played well enough to keep the left guard job in 2011.
The Jets will probably re-sign Wayne Hunter (if the price is right) and let him battle Ducasse for the right tackle job in training camp.
As for a Damien Woody, a torn Achilles is a tough injury, especially for a player on the wrong side of 30.
It’s possible the Jets put Woody on the PUP list, and he will serve as a great insurance policy, if the team suffers an offensive line injury the first six weeks of the season, he can be plugged in at almost every position on the line. Woody has played center, guard and tackle during his NFL career.
Ducasse has tremendous potential. He’s raw, but he’s a brute. In his limited action this year, he was tossing people around.
We asked a long-time offensive line coach what position he thinks is the best for Ducasse.
“Right tackle because of his nastiness and feet,” said the former line coach . . .
So it looks like Mark Sanchez isn’t going to need surgery on his injured right shoulder.
A source close to the situation told me after Sanchez was injured late in the year, that the quarterback had a capsule injury.
That is the type of injury Chad Pennington suffered this last year and he needed surgery.
But Sanchez told a friend of mine at the Super Bowl that his shoulder responded great to therapy, and he wouldn’t need surgery.
So what changed?
From what I understand, upon further review, it was just a stretched capsule, not a torn capsule. And a stretched capsule can be rehabbed, while a torn capsule needs surgery.
Pennington had a torn capsule.
Kudos to the Jets training staff led by John “Unchained” Mellody and Josh “Ed” Koch. They did a tremendous job handling Sanchez’s rehab.
