On the last play of practice . . .
Joe Flacco was under pressure, so he rolled right, and hit Michael Carter for a touchdown.
A couple of things on this play:
First of all, while Flacco doesn’t run as well as when he entered the league, he still has some mobility.
Secondly, allowing him to roll right cleanly, was a great block by right tackle Grant Hermanns, locking up powerful rookie defensive end Michael Clemons.
The way Hermanns locked up Clemons, and didn’t get overpowered, shows he’s pretty darn powerful himself.
The 6-7, 300-pound Purdue product likely isn’t going anywhere.
While he might not make the regular roster, he’s likely a practice squad lock. He’s made great strides since joining the team as an underrated free agent in 2021 . . .
Speaking of tackles, Chuma Edoga seemed to be dealing with some kind of injury today.
He continues to have issues staying healthy.
This is a tough decision for the Jets. He should be a perfect fit for the team’s zone blocking scheme since he’s so light on his feet, but he keeps getting dinged, and has been a little inconsistent in-game action.
If he is waived, he should be claimed. He’s too athletic to make it through waivers . . .
There was a pass today that was incomplete, but showed a lot nonetheless.
Mike White threw a fade into the corner of the end zone to Garrett Wilson. The receiver didn’t come down with it, and a DB might have contributed to that (there are no replays so it’s hard to tell), but the hops that Wilson showed on this play – WOW. He showed quite a vertical on this play. He is the epitome of an explosive athlete, whether it’s going up to grab the rock, or making people miss in the open field after the catch . . .
White had two nice TD throws in the red zone drill on crossing routes in the back of the end zone, first to Calvin Jackson and then to Lawrence Cager.
For those in the Twitter movement looking for Chris Streveler to supplant White on the roster, you might not get your wish.
Not saying White had a great game against Atlanta, but his supporting cast wasn’t very good. The line struggled and receivers weren’t getting open or were in the wrong spots.
White has some things to work on, but if you had a chance to watch these practices all summer, you wouldn’t be calling for his dismissal.
The Jets will likely keep both White and Streveler, with the latter perhaps landing on the practice squad . . .
Flacco threw a swing pass to Breece Hall out of the backfield, and the running back exploded up the sideline for a long gain. Like Wilson, this rookie is an explosive athlete. He caught the ball effortlessly, then headed up the field like he was shot out of cannon . . .
It looked like Solomon Thomas was called for a false start in the team part of the practice. I can’t confirm it because there are no announcements.
This play points out the big challenge for Jets’ defensive tackles. Most of them are smaller guys (from a defensive tackle standpoint), so they are constantly trying to jump into gaps off the snap, to avoid getting enveloped by much bigger offensive linemen.
And this can lead to penalties.
The point of this note isn’t to go after Thomas, who I think is going to be huge for the Jets, giving them DT depth they didn’t have last year, but rather to point out the challenge for the DTs in the system. They have to get off the ball fast, or sometimes they can get in trouble, because they are often outweighed by opposing offensive lineman by 30-40 pounds.
So they try to get off the ball like their hair is on fire every snap, and this leads to guys jumping offsides sometimes.
