I’m not going to put a tin foil hat on, but this story might require one.
Why would the Philadelphia Eagles trade an edge-rusher Hassan Reddkick, who had 16 and 11 sacks the last two years for them, who they had under contract for another year, to the Jets? It almost seems too good to be true for Gang Green.
Why would the Eagles sign Bryce Huff to a three-year, $51 million deal when they had Reddick, who is essentially the same player – very good edge rusher, but suboptimal against the run?
Why didn’t the Jets put a tag on Huff when rumors were flying in league circles, that the Eagles were going to sign him?
If the Jets didn’t want to pay Huff what the Eagles paid him, why were they willing to pay Reddick about $14 million this year, with a good chance they are going to give him a contract extension worth more?
If they are willing to pay Reddick that kind of money this year, why didn’t offer Jadeveon Clowney more?
Why would Eagles GM Howie Roseman give away a guy who had 27 sacks the last two years for his team for a conditional 2026 third-round pick?
Did Roseman give the Jets such a sweetheart deal because he seemingly tampered with Huff before the legal tampering period?
Here is the evidence of tampering:
Former NFL GM Michael Lombardi, said on March 6 on VSIN, five days before the legal tampering period even began: “I know there is a team that has offered [Bryce Huff] a fairly substantial amount of money, and I think he’s going to go to that team. I don’t want to accuse the team of tampering, so I won’t say (which team it is).”
Then after Huff signed, Lombardi essentially came clean on what team he was talking about on March 6:
“I reported last week, Bryce Huff before the franchise tag (deadline), that everyone in the league thought Bryce Huff was an Eagle,” Lombardi said. “I didn’t say the team because things can change, but everyone in the league thought Bryce Huff was an Eagle. Turns out he was an Eagle.”
Did Roseman give the Jets Reddick for so little because he knows he had his hand in the cookie jar, and the Jets could easily file a tampering claim with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell (pictured above)?
Did the Jets make the Reddick trade after not nailing down Clowney in free agency, when they thought they had him, which seemed to tick off their coach? Was the Reddick move a mea culpa to Robert Saleh, who reportingly had a heated conversation with the owner at the NFL meeting in Orlando a week ago, according to NFL Media’s Colleen Wolfe, who apologized for his report, but didn’t retract it.
I’m telling you, we could do a Dateline segment on this Huff-Reddick series of events. Very intriguing stuff.
But the bottom line is this looks like a hell of a deal for the Jets.
Granted, Reddick isn’t great against the run, but man, can he get after the passer, and the Jets couldn’t afford to just go with unproven Will McDonald and Jermaine Johnson as edge guys this year, and think it was set in stone they could wreck the game with them.
They need to replace Huff, their best edge-rusher, in the rotation, and Reddick should be able to do that.
