The Jets could use a guy like this . . .
Denver Broncos cornerbackĀ Pat Surtain IIĀ has been named AFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 12.
Surtain, who recorded his first multi-interception game of his career in Week 12, tallied five tackles (4 solo) and picked off Chargers quarterbackĀ Justin HerbertĀ twice in the fourth quarter, returning the second interception 70 yards for a touchdown.
The Jets need to get a guy like Surtain II with one of their two 2022 first-round picks, which will likely both be in the Top 10.
Surtain was picked ninth overall in the 2021 draft.
The players at the position are giving it all they’ve got for Gang Green, but the Jets need a true #1 cornerback in the worst way. Their pass coverage has contributed to a few losses this year.
With one of their two likely top ten picks, they need to get somebody like LSU’s Derek Stingley. It’s non-negotiable . . .
Former Jets punter Thomas Morestead was namedĀ NFC Special Teams Player of the Week. In his Atlanta Falcons debut, Morstead pinned three of his five punts inside the 20-yard line in a 21-14 victory at Jacksonville. He ended the game with an average of 44.8 yards per punt (35.0 net), with a long of 55 yards.
Morstead was the Jets’ punter from September 14- November 8, filling in for Braden Mann, who hurt his knee in the opener.
Mann is still wearing a knee brace, and according to CBS’ Jay Feely, he was not punted that well since his return.
This begs the question of why they needed to bring Mann back on November 8 with a knee brace, and why not just stay with Morstead? . . .
Speaking of knee braces, Jets’ right tackle Morgan Moses was wearing one on his right knee in practice today. He’s clearly not healthy, but the ultimate team player, who always plays hurt, going back to his days with the Washington Football Team, he is clearly fighting through a right knee issue. During the time with media gets to watch practice, which is about a half-hour at the very beginning, he was not working with the offensive lineman in individual drills, but working with trainers, doing rehab kind of stuff.
Moses is the consummate professional and quintessential teammate – it takes something pretty major to get him to miss a game. This was a very good signing by Joe Douglas, not just because he’s a good player, but because he shows the young players how to be a true pro. He’s a great role model on- and off-the-field . . .
Pictured above are the two kickers competing in practice this week to see who kicks on Sunday – Matt Ammendola and Alex Kessman, a Pitt product, who was signed early this week after Ammendola struggled in recent weeks. Like Ammendola, Kessman has a powerful leg, having kicked a 58-yard field goal for the Panthers at Boston College in October, 2020 . . .
Still no sign of Mike White on the practice field. He is out with COVID-19. Reserve QB Josh Johnson was spotted wearing a mask on the practice field. Many in the medical community don’t feel that masks are necessary outside . . .
With tight Trevon Wesco out 2-4 weeks with an ankle injury, the Jets signed Dan Brown to their practice squad after his release from Kansas City.
The injury to Wesco is an underrated loss for the Jets. He is a heck of a run blocker and was a big part of their run game explosition against Houston. Brown is more of an H-Back, who is good on special team’s coverage, but not a road-grading blocker like Wesco . . .
Watching a receiving drill today involving running backs, and saw Zach Wilson throw behind Tevin Coleman on a quick slant over the short middle. Not looking to make a big deal about one throw, but you have to wonder where Wilson’s head is at right now, with a knee issue preying on his mind, and four quarterback coaches in his ear.
