Premium – There is a receiver in the draft probably not receiving the attention he should, due to a bad forty time. Teams will likely rue the day the bypassed him in the draft . . .
When Jarvis Landry ran a 4.77 forty at the Combine, this shocked a lot of people and hurt his draft stock a little. But he redeemed himself by running a 4.51 at LSU’s Pro Day. Scouts love this guy as a football player. His style of play has been compared to Hines Ward. Landry has great hands, is fearless over the middle, is a very good blocker, has a great work ethic and terrific leadership skills. He could make a very nice second or third round pick for the Jets.
This past season, Landry led LSU in receptions (77), yards receiving (1,193) and in touchdowns (10).
Here is a conversation with this underrated prospect . . .
Q)What can you tell us about your relationship with Odell Beckham?
Landry: It’s an interesting relationship. I got a chance to meet him our sophomore year of high school and we talked about playing together and competing against each other. We finally had a chance to go to LSU together and it was surreal just to think that all that we talked about, we were experiencing.
Q)You two seem very close . . .
Landry: We embraced challenges and we embraced it together. That blood brother thing means a lot. That’s what he always says about us and I feel the same way.
Q)Can you talk about your different styles?
Landry: It’s like apples and oranges. We’re both great players. He takes the top off things a lot. For me, it’s intermediate, it’s special teams and kickoff. It’s the dirty work mostly, but you know, I love to do it.
Q)What do you need to do to be successful in the NFL?
Landry: It’s not being average. I fail at being average. For me, it’s about trying to get better, challenging guys to get better and being a leader.
Q)Was it difficult to leave LSU early?
Landry: Actually, it wasn’t too hard. My job going into this past offseason, I told myself I was going to make it as hard as possible with Coach Cam (Cameron) and Coach (Les) Miles to make me stay with my senior year in mind the whole time. I had a productive year along with another 1,000 yard receiver, a 1,000 yard running back and a 500 yard running back.
Q)What are attributes you personally bring to the NFL?
Landry: I’m a selfless guy. And I believe in other people’s success. You’re going to get a football player. … I’m a football player. I’m going to play special teams, I’m (hard to bring down) across the middle. I’m going to block linebackers, safeties. It doesn’t matter. … Just the little things that people forget.
Q)How much did it help you playing in a pro offense under coordinator Cam Cameron?
Landry: He challenged us. He came with an NFL mindset to a college meeting and he challenged us mentally. He challenged us as far as time management, and he challenged us to train like a pro and think like a pro. In doing so, he brought the digit system, which is probably the best system created.
