Based on common sense, JD really didn’t have much of a choice

There was all this talk about the Jets needing to pick Georgia tight end Brock Bowers in the first round.

While Bowers is a heck of a player, how would that have made sense, considering they signed a left tackle, Tyron Smith, who has not played a complete season since 2016?

Smith is an elite left tackle, no doubt, but has had myriad injuries over the years, including back issues last year, and it wasn’t the first time in his career his back acted up.

So the Jets picking Penn State left tackle Olu Fashanu made perfect sense.

Not only do they need an heir apparent for Smith, who is signed for just one year, they need an insurance policy for him this year.

After all, we are talking about the all-important job of protecting QB Aaron Rodgers’ blindside.

The Jets could not get cute. They needed to pick a tackle.
