Florham Park – Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr is a terrific prospect. No doubt about it.
But like a lot of rookies, he needs a ton of work.
And while all quarterback prospects face a huge step-up in competition from the college ranks to the NFL, when you come from the Mountain West Conference, it’s even steeper than quarterbacks from conferences like the SEC and Big Ten.
In the MWC, Carr faced the likes of Utah State, Hawaii, Nevada, UNLV, San Jose State and Hawaii.
The Mountain West was one of the worst defensive conferences in the country last year.
And when Carr faced a Pac-12 team, USC, in the Las Vegas Bowl, he had his worst game of last season.
Carr could be really good in time, but the quantum leap in competition level could make it pretty tough on him, especially early in the year.
The Jets could be getting him at just the right time.
