He pulled no punches . . .
Former NFL QB Brady Quinn was asked about the Jets over/under win total in 2022-23 during an appearance on the CBS Sports Network.
“Their season is going to be over before the bye,” Quinn said. “I mean that is just the reality of it. They play the entire AFC North and they might go 0-4 [to start the season]. I mean, there is a realistic scenario where they’re 1-8, maybe 0-9. As good as the roster has improved, I just haven’t been a fan of Zach Wilson. I think this is an unbelievably difficult schedule that lines up in the second half, but they could be decimated by that point. I’ve got them winning five games and probably going back to the drawing board at the quarterback position in the 2023 NFL draft.”
A lot to unpack here.
First of all, let’s start with the first four games.
I’m not sure why people, and Quinn isn’t alone, are making the first four games a nightmare for the Jets. All those teams are in the AFC North. So? Who is playing QB for the Browns in Week Two? Who is playing QB for the Steelers in Week Four? Obviously, Baltimore and Cincinnati should be very tough foes, but remember the Ravens have a bunch of key players coming off serious injuries, so they could be rusty in Week One, and the Jets beat the Bengals last year.
Hey, of course the Jets could start off 0-4, but not sure the NFC North is unbeatable over the first four games.
As for 1-8, 0-9, I view Jets home games against Miami in Week 5, and against New England in Week 8, as winnable games.
I’m not going to go over every game, but I’m not sure about this 1-8 or 0-9 stuff. And also, let’s not forget, you just don’t know what injury reports will look like for each team when you face them. We all know the NFL is the most injury-laden league of them all, and you don’t know who will be available when you face these teams. I will give you a perfect example:
When we saw Titans at Jets on the schedule last season, most of us probably assumed this would be an easy win for Tennessee, coming off a very good season. But when we saw the game on the schedule, none of us knew they’d be playing the Jets without both of their starting receivers – A.J. Brown and Julio Jones – who were both injured. The Jets won the game, and surely the Titans not having their two standout receivers impacted the outcome of the game.
So who knows about this schedule stuff, this over/under stuff, but to me, the most interesting part of the quote, wasn’t the schedule prediction, but his comment about Wilson.
Not sure why Quinn doesn’t love Wilson as a player, because he didn’t say, at least not in this quote. He just said he wasn’t a “fan” of the player.
Now some people will be quick to say that Quinn wasn’t a great QB in the NFL, so what the heck does he know, but I’ve never bought that kind of argument. Just because you weren’t a great QB, doesn’t mean you can’t evaluate quarterbacks. Look, Jordan Palmer, who many NFL quarterbacks go to for tutoring, wasn’t a great NFL QB. I’m not saying that Quinn is right about Wilson, just saying the argument that somebody wasn’t great at the position, so what does he know, is a theory that has holes in it. Was Bill Parcells a good defensive lineman? Not really, but who knew more about defensive linemen than most. Was Bill Belichick a good player at Wesleyan?
Time will tell if the Jets go 1-8 or 0-9, but for you gamblers out there, beware of all these shows giving gambling advice. If any of these shows were great at making picks, would these sportsbooks be sponsoring them? Do you think they want people giving customers advice that is going to make the sportsbooks lose a lot of money? I’m not saying the people on these shows are trying to mislead people. Not at all. It’s just really hard to make gambling picks. Who really knows what is going to happen?
