The Jets training camp practice today was action-packed. Here is some of what I saw . . .
I think many of us just assume a veteran free agent addition is going to pick up things up quickly, based on that fact that they are a veteran.
It doesn’t always work that way, especially for a player like Chris Johnson, who was basically in the same offense in Tennessee for six years.
It’s a big adjustment for him.
“The playbook is hard,” Johnson said after practice.
So Johnson’s head is spinning right now. He’s got a lot of work to do . . .
Not only did Jace Amaro sit out today’s practice as he worked with the trainers, but Jeff Cumberland seemed to also hurt his knee today. I saw him limping around after a play with a right knee issue . . .
Dexter McDougle has been very average so far in camp. He gave up a couple of significant gains today, including Stephen Hill blowing by him down the right sideline. McDougle looked sluggish on his play, not playing to his timed speed.
I think it’s pretty apparent he’s still getting back into a football grove after missing most of his senior season with a shoulder injury.
Maybe the Jets need to slow down with him a little, and not rush him, as Rex is wont to due with players he touts.
No need to anoint. Why not see what Jeremy Reeves can do (he had a pick today) . . .
On a deep out to Stephen Hill, Dee Milliner gave him way too much cushion.
Milliner did this a lot last year – too much cushion, concerned with getting beat deep.
I think he’s a #2 corner, and that is okay.
Dimitri Patterson is the better player right now.
Early in practice he had a terrific PD on a quick slant to Eric Decker . . .
WR Greg Salas is having a good training training camp.
Not only have a couple of nice grabs today, but he pancaked a linebacker A.J. Edds blocking on a running play.
He’s making himself very tough to cut . . .
Amaro had a big ice bag wrapped on his right knee while doing a radio interview after practice.
With Cumberland and Zach Sudfeld, who the Jets both like a great deal, there really is no reason to rush Amaro.
This guy has a huge upside, but right now, as one observer put it, “he just knows how to catch the ball.”
Basically what this person, a former scout, was saying, is that coming out of that funky Texas Tech offense, where he played in the slot like a receiver, Amaro needs a ton of work on in-line blocking and route-running.
I’m not saying he shouldn’t have a role. Of course he should, but make it limited, until he’s ready for a full-time job . . .
This fullback battle is fun to watch – both Tommy Bohanon and Chad Young are really getting after it, hammering linebackers left and right.
The more I watch Young, the more I realize the San Diego State graduate isn’t just camp fodder.
He is a tenacious bowling ball with top-shelf toughness.
When he blocks somebody, you hear it.
He came off the practice field with blood all over his uniform . . .
A longshot linebacker Steele Devitto has a nose for the ball.
In a running drill, featuring just linemen (on both sides of the ball) and running backs, he made a ton of tackles.
DeVitto is a product of Boston College and Don Bosco Prep in New Jersey . . .
