It was the second strong game in a row for the Jets blockers. Let’s take a look at their work in the Jets win over Kansas City. Here is Part I of Dan’s break down.
The Jets scored on their first offensive drive, going 77 yards on 11 plays.
John Connor has quietly done a very good job over the last month. He led Shonn Greene into the hole, and got him going on 31-yard run, on the Jets first play. Green took care of LB Derrick Johnson in the hole on the right side.
There were a couple of other key early blocks on this play. Matt Slauson did a nice job of pulling to the right on this play, and had a key block. Also, Nick Mangold locked up DE Glenn Dorsey. These three blocks got the play going. Greene also helped his own cause, breaking a tackle attempt by a defensive lineman about five yards into the play, and then 15 yards into the play, he broke another tackle attempt by CB Brandon Carr.
This drive ended with a one-yard QB sneak to the left side for a touchdown.
Greene and the offensive line did a great job of selling the fake run up the middle, and this allowed Sanchez to waltz into the end zone running to the left.
The Jets next drive was a three-and-out, including LT being stopped for no gain on third down.
The Jets third drive wasn’t a three-and-out, but didn’t amount to much.
The possession ended with Sanchez by sacked by CB Javier Arenas. He blitzed off the edge and wasn’t picked up. Sanchez probably could have helped matter with a hot read because as far as I could see, there were no blockers left to pick up Javier, so this is where the QB needs to help out.
The next possession was a three-and-out, including a Greene loss of one on first down. What had to disturb Bill Callahan about this play was the Jets had a sixth offensive lineman in on the play, Vlad Ducasse, and he lined up on the right side, and that is where the play went, and it still lost one.
The drive ended with Sanchez being sacked on third down. OLB Justin Houston beat Wayne Hunter with an inside move to bring down the quarterback. This is a rookie pass rusher who has limited moves in his bag of tricks. Hunter needs to do a better job of being aware of a possible inside move by a guy who usually comes off the edge.
In the middle of the second quarter, a Jim Leonhard pick gave the Jets great field position on the KC 38. On the first play, the Jets ran a screen on the left side to Greene, and he took it for 36 yards. Matt Slauson got out into the left flat, and took care of Derrick Johnson. Nick Mangold got way down field and knocked LB Javon Belcher (West Babylon) to the ground.
The Jets scored two plays later when Sanchez hit Santonio Holmes in the back of the end zone.
We will have Part II of our look at the blockers by 11 am on Tuesday morning.
