Mobile, Alabama – It’s time for a heaping helping of Jets Whispers from the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama . . .
Mr. Coffee was spending a lot of time looking at pass rush drills today.
The best edge pass rusher I saw in both practices was a guy named Carroll Phillips (pictured above with his agent). By far.
Look, I don’t want to make too much out of one practice, but this guy was almost unblockable coming off the edge, not just as a pass rusher, but in run support, which was important for him to show.
He’s motivated this week to show he’s not just a pass rusher, but can play the run because, “some coaches say I can’t play the run.”
6-3, 240 with 4.6 speed with a tremendous motor
Keep an eye on this guy. He was a wrecking ball, and just what the Jets need . . .
I was just talking to a player at the media dinner – Syracuse WR Amba Etta-Tawo who had 94 receptions and 14 touchdowns this year. He has great speed (4.38). He caught a nice deep pass in the practice today.
I asked him if the Jets have shown any interest. He had just checked his phone, and said they had texted him to set up a meeting in Mobile.
Born in Oman in the Middle East to a pair of Nigerian educators, he moved to George at the age of four. He went to Maryland, but never really emerged. He went to Syracuse for his senior year as a grad student, and exploded.
He’s really smart. Education is so important in the Nigerian culture. His mother always told him, “A ‘C’ is an ‘F.’” . . .
The quarterbacks on the North and South in his game were underwhelming today . . .
Alabama tight end O.J. Howard was a man among boys today on practice field. 6-5, 251 with great speed, he caught several deep passes, and looks like he’s going to be special on the next level . . .
Villanova defensive end Tanoh Kpassagnon flashed today. He’s a 6-7, 290-pound end who would be a good fit for the 3-4 end position in the Jets’ defense.
In the one-on-one line drills, he threw Western Kentucky guard Forrest Lamp to the ground. He has a nice combination of quickness and power. Impressive prospect . . .
I ran into the Jets security chief Bobby Mastroddi in Mobile. A former police officer, he’s here to do background checks on prospects . . .
Nick Saban stopped by the stadium to show support for his players like O.J. Howard. It’s also good for him to show his face in Mobile, an area that he has done a tremendous job recruiting (Julio Jones comes to mind).
He took a few pictures and signed some autographs, when Alabama’s sports PR guy yelled a couple of times, “he has to go recruiting.”
Brilliant way to get him out of the stadium without offending any fans.
What Alabama fan would be mad at him for not staying around to sign autographs or pose for pictures if he has to go recruit more great prospects for the program?
