New Jersey – A few different things to get into today in this edition of Jets Website Whispers. Let’s get into it . . .
Rich Gannon made a point that is so true about Ryan Fitpatrick.
“Sometimes with Ryan Fitzpatrick makes up his mind – he can’t pull it back – I think that is part of the issue with him right now a little bit – you can’t predetermine where you are going with the football,” Gannon said. “Find me a check-up underneath to a run.”
This is an area he needs to improve.
Speaking of check downs underneath. Having both Bilal Powell and Matt Forte at running back is going to be like a pipe dream for Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey.
Gailey likes delayed screens to running backs when defensive coordinators dial up creative stuff.
Both Powell and Forte are superb receivers . . .
The Jets could use another quarterback in this draft. It’s smart to pick one every year. It’s good business, especially when you don’t have a bonafide franchise quarterback. Obviously, they aren’t going to get Carson Wentz or Jared Goff, but there is a second-tier guy, who isn’t getting much attention, who has the potential to be damn good – Arkansas’ Brandon Allen.
“I’ve been a big proponent of Brandon Allen throughout this process from Arkansas,” said former NFL scout Daiel Jeremiah, now working for the NFL Network. “I know he’s not the biggest guy, and everybody had fun with the hand size deal and how he got the hand massage and got his hands a little bit bigger. But he’s a coach’s kid. He’s been through a lot of adversity. Fought through it at Arkansas, and really played well last year.
“When I broke down the tape to the point where I would consider taking him in the late second round, early third round. He had 30 touchdowns, only eight picks, and completed I think 56% of his passes. So the numbers are good, and he’s doing it under center a lot in that offense at Arkansas. I think it translates well. You might get a nice little value with him in this draft.” . . .
There are a couple of offensive tackles who could be in play for the Jets with the 20th pick of the first round – Ohio State’s Taylor Decker and Michigan State’s Jack Conklin.
I asked a college coach, who broke down film of both, if they are left tackle or right tackle prospects, and he thinks they both are a better fit for the right side in the NFL.
Is it worth taking a right tackle with the 20th pick in the first round?
Some feel it’s not worth it. I remember in 1998, Bill Parcells felt there was a middle round player who he could get who could start at right tackle for the Jets and do a good job. He got him in the fourth round. It was Jason Fabini. Then the next year, he picked a right tackle in the seventh round, who ended up starting as a rookie for an injured Fabini, and his name was Ryan Young.
So clearly you don’t need to pick right tackles in the first round.
And I honestly believe, if the Jets move on from Breno Giacomini for cap reasons, Brent Qvale can do the job. I don’t like Qvale on the left side, but I think he’s rock solid on the right side.
