One of the Jets’ biggest needs, not many people were talking about, was for a massive run-stuffing defensive tackle to help fix their leaky run defense.
On Monday night, ESPN’s Adam Schefter announced on X:
“Former 49ers free-agent DT Javon Kinlaw reached agreement on a one-year deal with the New York Jets, per source.”
Kinlaw is a 6-5, 319-pound defensive tackle, who spent his first four NFL seasons with the San Francisco, after being picked 14th overall in the 2020 draft.
After an injury-plagued first three years, the 49ers didn’t pick up his fifth-year option last year, and ironically he had his healthiest season in San Francisco last year, not missing a game.
He is a massive, powerful player with the wingspan of an aircraft carrier and impressive movement skills for a man his size.
Also, SNY’s Connor Hughes announced on Tuesday the Jets are adding gigantic nose tackle Leki Fotu, formerly of the Arizona Cardinals. He is 6-5, 334 block of granite who makes it hard to run up the middle.
If these two guys can stay healthy, they should help fix a big problem for the Jets the last couple of years, and that was giving up too many rushing yards up the middle due to being undersized up the gut.
