There was a podcast this week talking about how the tough New York media really went after the Jets over Aaron Rodgers missing minicamp and some of the coach’s comments about it.
But in their conversation they were talking about the headlines on the backpage of the tabloids.
The people that come up with the stuff aren’t reporters who cover the team or sports columnists. They are in an office somewhere, and one of their jobs is to come up with attention-grabbing back (and front) page headlines.
The coverage the Jets got this week wasn’t that brutal in the New York market.
And I’m not judging anybody and what they wrote. Perhaps the writers are playing the long game, and think Rodgers missing a two day minicamp isn’t a big deal, and isn’t worth burning bridges over with vitriolic commentary.
The point here is simple – the back page headlines of tabloids should not be how you judge the toughness of the market.
The tabloids have been doing this forever, and it helps them sell papers.
Judge the market by what is written in the articles, not the back page of the tabloids.
