New Jersey – The handling of the Quincy Enunwa situation was far from ideal. Even Todd Bowles wondered publicly what took so long . . .
Enunwa was suspended for the next four games for an incident in the summer of 2014.
This is clearly an example of NFL justice post-Ray Rice incident.
As you know, the NFL is very PR-oriented.
It’s still very fuzzy what happened between Enunwa and his former girlfriend in a hotel room in the summer of 2014.
Yes, his former girlfriend didn’t show up to court, and chose not to pursue the case, but the charges were dropped.
So the NFL is acting above the law, basically saying, “We don’t care if the charges were dropped, we don’t like what we heard about the case, so we are going to act on our own.”
And if you noticed, information about the settlement was released to writer/activist Jane McManus of ESPN.
A source leaked to her that there was a settlement between the NFLPA and the NFL to reduce Enunwa’s suspension from six to four games.
So not only did to the writer/activist get what she clearly wanted, an Enunwa suspension, she got the inside info
on what went down.
Seems like some appeasement going on here.
If the Enunwa-incident happened prior to the Rice-incident, there is no way Enunwa would have received a six-game suspension, reduced to four.
I’m not condoning Enunwa reportedly pulling his girlfriend off a bed leading to her suffering minor injuries. No way. I’m doing that.
But this case was settled in a court of law. He’s off the hook now.
The timing stinks.
If the NFL was going to suspend Enunwa, it should have been one or two games, and it should have happened a lot earlier.
What evidence did they have to gather over a year? It should not have taken this long.
And now it comes out right before the Jets-Pats game, and this will help the Pats, an organization fighting with the league office.
I’m not saying Enunwa is a star, but he’s a valuable extra receiver to the Jets, and one of their better special team’s players. And this is team really struggling on special teams, so to take out one of their few good cover guys, certainly hurts them.
Enunwa is a good guy.
I’m not condoning what happened in the hotel room, but you talk to anybody at Nebraska, and you get high marks on his character.
People make mistakes.
And the charges were dropped.
Even Todd Bowles was surprised at the timing of this, and he said so publicly. It’s unusual for a guy so close to the vest to basically criticize the league.
If you are going to throw the activists a bone, do it during the 2014 season, and get it over with.
The Jets elevated WR Kenbrell Thompkins to the active roster to take Enunwa’s roster spot. While he’s not as big as Enunwa, he has better speed, and he was with the Patriots in 2013-14, and then again in 2015, so it’s a good week to promote him. He was last with New England in September, on their practice squad. He also played for the Oakland Raiders, and did a nice job out there. So the Jets now have a receiver on their roster with a ton of experience practicing against the secondaries of their next two opponents. He has a good feel for the players he will be facing.
