This is what a guy with a ton of friends around the league is hearing . . .
Former Tampa Bay Buccaneer GM, Mark Dominik, is hearing this about what might get the Aaron Rodgers to the Jets deal done:
“I get the sense that we’re going to see the Packers move from 15 to 13,” said Dominik, now with SiriusXM NFL Radio. “And Aaron Rodgers is going to be (with the Jets) as well as another draft pick. And I think that’s been something where the Packers move up a little bit, they get a second round, third round value (with that move-up) (and) they get another pick.
“So, they’re getting close to that one-round value that they’ve been talking about. But, they’re waiting for that flip. Because I don’t know of any other reason why it wouldn’t be done unless they’re trying to use the draft pick to do it.
“If it’s next year’s 1, you would do that today, right? You could get that out of the way. So that’s why I keep thinking something is going to happen 13 to 15, and that’s when Aaron Rodgers is going to flip.”
This is kind of the first time we’ve heard this, where a part of the trade is the Packers moving up from 15 to 13 in the first round and then getting a couple of other picks.
It makes perfect sense and should be able to get done.
The only concern for the Jets would be if they are knocking themselves out of the running for an offensive lineman they might want by moving from 15 to 13.
But while Ohio State’s Paris Johnson, Northwestern’s Peter Skoronski and Georgia’s Broderick Jones, considered the top three by many, are terrific prospects, none are Anthony Munoz, Orlando Pace, Jonathan Ogden type of prospects, so there is a still a chance one of three will be there at 15.
And who knows, Joe Douglas might like Tennessee’s Darnell Wright or Oklahoma’s Anton Harrison just as much as the aforementioned three. We have no idea what the Jets board looks like. It’s under lock and key at 1 Jets Drive in Florham Park.
Also, while we all assume the Jets will pick an offensive lineman in the first round, that certainly isn’t set in stone. People say, “Well they need to protect Aaron Rodgers” so they need to pick a lineman.
Well, some might argue a raw lineman, which some of these guys are, like Johnson, might not be an ideal guy to protect Rodgers, especially early in the season, as the lineman learns the whys and wherefores of playing in the NFL.
Skoronski might be the most turnkey guy, but he might need to move inside to guard, so who knows how long that will take?
Hey, I think an offensive lineman is the most likely choice by the Jets in Round 1, whether it’s at 13 or 15, but you never know.
They will likely wait until Round 2 to pick a center. That seems to be better landing spot for the top centers in this draft.
But that scenario Dominik points out makes a ton of sense about the Packers and Jets flipping 15 and 13 as part of the trade.
