A heaping helping . . .
Tevin Coleman was back in practice, and he showed what a great fit he is for the zone blocking scheme.
Not getting into any details on the play, but it was a typical zone blocking play, where the line pushes all the defensive linemen in one direction, and the runner patiently waited for the flow to go one way, planted his foot in the ground, and ran across the grain.
It was textbook.
Coleman was with Mike LaFleur (and Kyle Shanahan) with Atlanta and San Francisco, so he has a Ph.D. on how to execute zone runs . . .
Mekhi Becton wore a bulky brace (not Joe Namath bulky) on his right knee. Don’t know if the knee is bothering him, or if the brace was just for precautionary reasons.
I just remember that first day of camp, when Becton was having some issues during practice, it seemed like he was walking gingerly at times on the knee.
Now to his credit, he bounced back from that practice, and practiced full since that day, but seeing that brace makes you wonder how the knee is feeling . . .
Speaking of legs, rookie OT Max Mitchell had a compression sleeve on his left leg . . .
Carl Lawson and John Franklin-Myers had QB pressures early in practice . . .
Jeremy Ruckert gave up some pressure, and Mike White did a nice job of stepping up in the pocket and hitting a target underneath.
But this was Ruckert’s first football practice since late January (at the Senior Bowl), so the fact that he was rusty is totally understandable . . .
A positive part of White’s game is how smoothly he goes through progressions. Not going to get into great detail, but on a play, he looked to one side of the field, and then he turned his head to the other side, and hit Elijah Moore . . .
Watching him early in camp, you get the sense Solomon Thomas is going to help the Jets a great deal. He’s a pro’s pro who knows what he’s going out there.
He had a nice run stop in the backfield on Michael Carter today, and he also had a QB pressure . . .
Zach Wilson had an impressive competition to Carter down the sideline. Wilson got out of the way of incoming pressure and put this ball on the money.
Carter beat C.J. Mosley on this play.
Look, it’s not easy for any linebacker to run with Carter, who runs 4.5, but it’s going to be interesting to see if Mosley can improve his coverage a little from last year (no picks and just two PDs). His run defense is good, and his pass coverage instincts are fine, but how are the wheels at this point of his career? Hey, they could be fine. We will see . . .
The other day Zach Wilson said he’s staying off social media so he can focus on football, so it was kind of funny today seeing him with one of the social media people after practicing holding up a phone and sending some message.
Now in his defense, he’s just trying to help the team’s marketing efforts.
And it should be pointed out, that he wasn’t going on social media and looking at comments, per se, he was just posting a message that the social person from the Jets will post . . .
A guy who doesn’t get a lot of public attention, who the Jets love, is fullback Nick Bawden. Whether it’s on special teams or as a lead fullback, he takes no prisoners. He is one of those “block to the whistle” kind of guys, and he ticked off some defender today, and a tussle (I wouldn’t call it a fight) followed. I couldn’t make out the defender’s number because there were so many teammates joining the fray and surrounding them.
Michael Carter said in the spring that he’s worried about Bawden, because the guy has so little regard for his body on the football field. That was meant as a compliment to the fullback’s toughness . . .
