A positive development for this player on the injury front . . .
It didn’t look good for Corey Davis on Thursday when he was held out of practice with a groin injury and was working on the rehab field.
However, today, he was back practicing, and not only that, we saw him cutting full throttle in a passing drill with no hesitation on several routes, so there is a chance he could play.
The key will be how he feels on Saturday, but watching him today, he certainly looked like a player who has a good chance at playing . . .
Tough day for Day 3 of the Jets’ kicking competition between Matt Ammendola and Alex Kessman. It was very, very windy today in Florham Park, the kind of day that makes perfectly good kicks into bad ones . . .
Not to make a big deal about one pass but in a red-zone passing drill, with no defenders, Zach Wilson sailed a pass over the head of Elijah Moore. The pass was from the 10-yard-line.
Once again, it was one pass, but it certainly was a gimme.
Wilson and Moore still seem to be working out some chemistry issues. Remember against Houston, in the second quarter, on a quick slant on third-and-three, Wilson and Moore failed to connect on what should have been a fairly easy completion.
It’s going to be fascinating to see what Wilson does against Philadelphia. Many cut him some slack for his inconsistent game against Houston because he had missed the last month, so perhaps he was rusty.
That narrative is obviously off the table this week . . .
The Sheldon Rankins knee injury is a big problem for the Jets.
After Rankins, Quinnen Williams and Foley Fatukasi, the Jets are very thin on the defensive line, and the Eagles have one of the NFL’s best offensive lines.
Jets coach Robert Saleh was talking up Jonathan Marshall today, but he’s still pretty raw, and it’s far from ideal for him to finally get some PT against this offensive line.
The right tackle Lane Johnson might be the best in football, the center Jason Kelce is one of the best in the league, and the left side is downright scary with two massive people-movers.
Left guard Landon Dickerson is listed at 6-6, 333 pounds and left tackle Jordan Mailata at 6-8, 365 pounds, but both are probably bigger. Kelce said recently that Mailata, a former Australian Rugby player, is closer to 400 pounds.
“We got some big boys on the line now,” said Johnson. “You look at the left side and Landon and Jordan – man, just some big humans moving some people.”
Probably the best run-blocking line in the league.
So this doesn’t look like a good week for Rankins to be out, and for Marshall and Nathan Shepherd to play more. Shepherd is a wonderful guy with an unbelievable motor, but he’s on the ground too much. Nothing personal.
Last week, in the first quarter, Houston Texans guard Lane Taylor took Shepherd to the ground on a Rex Burkhead 10-yard run up the middle on fourth-and-one.
This would be a tough challenge for the Jets’ line with Rankins, but without him, even a bigger challenge . . .
Jets safety Elijah Riley was a big help to the Jets’ defense this week in preparing for the Philadelphia Eagles’ offense.
He was with the Eagles the entire off-season and summer, and on their practice squad from August 31 – November 9, and November 9 the Jets signed him off the Eagles’ practice squad.
Riley has a strong feel for Jalen Hurts, and what they are looking to do in an offense that is kind of funky with a lot of read-option and misdirection stuff.
