Davante Adams had high praise for Jeff Ulbrich on Thursday.
“Immediately what I was met with is first of all, a grown man that’s not a not afraid of other grown men,” Adams said. “You come in this position and you are a position coach before it’s easy to just kind of just come in and be the likable guy, but he’s not worried about being accepted he wants to be respected as a head coach.”
Adams loves the accountability that Ulbrich brings.
“I feel like that’s where we connected, just hearing the way he holds guys accountable, you know, he’ll he’ll turn around and juice up somebody when they do something with positive reinforcement (and in) team meetings not afraid to call guys out,” Adams said.
One person on Twitter saw this quote and thought it was a shot at Robert Saleh, but I don’t think so, since Adams never played under Saleh, who was fired on October 8, and the Jets acquired Adams on October 15.
Adams is extremely bright and offers great football insight, and this take is salient.
It’s too early to tell if Ulbrich is the Jets long-term answer as head coach, but there is no doubt the football accountability has gone to another level. He has already pointed out in press conferences that Sauce Gardner and Quincy Williams recent tackling needs to improve. He didn’t rip them, but pointed it out. He also did a good job of handling the Malachi Corley situation on the sideline after the fumble on the goalline.
He’s not one to sugarcoat or spin.
The Jets needed more accountability, and Ulbrich has done a nice job on this front. Now, he just needs to string some wins together . . .
From what I hear, the Jets plan to stay over Sunday night in Arizona and return Monday.
I don’t recall hearing this scenario where a team stays over after the game when they play at home the next week. Obviously sometimes teams stay west or east for the week if they have back-to-back games on that coast.
This decision was likely driven by sports science . . .
The Jets got great news on their offensive line injury front with the news that guards Alijah Vera-Tucker (ankle) and John Simpson (groin) will play.
It was kind of iffy for both earlier in the week.
A Jets offensive explosion is not out of the question this week, with their line intact, against a middling defense that gave up 34 points to Green Bay in Week 6. The Packers and Jets essentially play the same system. They also gave up 42 to Washington in Week 4.
The key to this game is the Jets’ run defense, which was a huge focus in Jets practice this week.
Cardinals tailback James Connor is having a terrific season. He is a big back (6-1, 233) with top-shelf toughness. He breaks a lot of arm tackles.
Ulbrich did a special presentation to his defense about dealing with Connor.
“We did a whole tackling presentation on him, which we never do and how to tackle this guy because he’s unique in a lot of ways,” Ulbrich said. “It’s going to be a great challenge, if you don’t stop him, you don’t stop the Cardinals.” . . .
After Ulbrich was elevated to head coach, he felt they needed another defensive assistant, since he, and the team’s former coach Robert Saleh, ran the defense.
So think about it. They lost their co-defensive coordinator (Saleh) and with Ulbrich not just running the defense, but the entire team, they needed another defensive assistant, so he added former NFL linebacker Paul Worrilow from the University of Delaware staff. Worrilow was a terrific linebacker for the Atlanta Falcons under Ulbrich.
