New Jersey – Rich Gannon made an intriguing comment about the Jets’ QB situation in 2014. Let’s take a look, and also look at a Jets roster move . . .
Rich Gannon made a bold statement in the second quarter of the Jets-Dolphins game.
“I don’t think the starting quarterback of the 2014 Jets is currently on the roster,” Gannon said.
Interesting.
You could just dismiss it as his opinion.
But he’s usually pretty close to the vest, and it’s a little out of character for him to say something that brash.
These network broadcasters get great access and information from NFL teams leading up to games.
They are treated royally because the network broadcast fees are the lifeblood of the NFL. They are worth billions. The NFL and their member teams know where their bread is buttered.
Not only are the broadcasters on the field before the game, talking to players and coaches, but they have special production meetings with important members of the organizations a day or two before the game.
In other words, they talk to a lot of people.
And it’s not like a Rex Ryan or Marty Mornhinweg press conference with the beat writers. The networks gets good stuff.
Of course we have no idea if Gannon got this from somebody with the team, or it was just his opinion.
But he said it with such conviction, I just get the sense he knows something.
I wouldn’t be shocked if they traded for a guy like Matt Schaub, maybe Jay Cutler – somebody like that, and moved Geno Smith into a backup role after this year, with perhaps Smith emerging down the road again as a starter.
The Jets got a mulligan this year with a new GM and starting a rookie quarterback, but that mulligan ends in 2014.
The fans are going to demand a winner next year.
The Jets are in a great position with the eight draft picks (including two in the third round thanks to the Darrelle Revis’ trade), and some supplemental picks on the way, to make a splash during the selection meetings.
They will also have a better cap situation to be able to dip into free agency.
All that is fine and dandy, but they know they must have a better plan at quarterback than this year.
So when Gannon says, ““I don’t think the starting quarterback of the 2014 Jets is currently on the roster,” I think he’s on to something . . .
I mentioned yesterday what a good coverage linebacker Danny Lansanah is, and obviously the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were aware of that also. because they signed him off the Jets’ practice squad today.
Tampa Bay needed a linebacker after putting Jonathan Casillas on injured reserve today with a knee injury.
Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano is well aware of Lansanah from his days at the University of Connecticut. Schiano was the long-time coach of Rutgers, and they played UConn quite a bit in the old Big East.
I don’t know why the Jets need to have 10 offensive linemen on the active roster. Why not move one of them to the practice squad, and try to keep Lansanah, a very instinctive linebacker who is always around the ball. I personally think they made mistake letting him walk. We will see.
