It’s clearly time to move on.
Zach Wilson won’t start the season finale at New England.
Whether it’s concussion-related, or not, it’s the right decision.
They are clearly going to trade him this off-season, and they need him to have a clean bill of health.
“Sources close to the situation confirmed to the Deseret News that the Jets have told Zach Wilson he will be traded after the season,” wrote Doug Wilson of the Deseret News on December 8.” Wilson and coach Robert Saleh agreed to a mutual parting following the benching.”
Wilson ended up returning to the lineup after the benching, but got concussed in the first half against Miami.
The game before that, he perhaps played his best half of football in a win over Houston. That game needs to be a big part of the resume they present to a potential trade suitor. Yes, he played against Miami after that, but the O-Line was so bad, it’s hard to blame him for that first half.
So one of the last memories of Wilson on the field was him at his best. Sell the hell out of that, and tell other teams he had no chance against Miami in that first half. That Houston second half is what we are selling.
Another reason you can’t play him in New England, is Belichick’s tricky scheme historically has given him fits, and Wilson has played some of his worst games against the Patriots. You don’t need people seeing that, as their last film of this season, if you are trying to sell him.
Wilson needs to get out of here, and it’s really not market-related.
People will say he’s not made to play in New York.
I think that is hogwash, because this market isn’t that tough anymore, especially the Jets beat, which is evolved into milquetoast for some reason.
So it’s not New York that is the problem, it’s things like he was rushed into the lineup as a rookie, had to learn a new offense after this second year, and should have been redshirted this year, and not been the primary backup behind Rodgers, and one snap away. If you are trying to fix a QB’s mechanics, and footwork and help him read defenses better, then do you think he should have been one snap away, especially early in the season? They should have had a veteran backup with Wilson as the #3. That was a no-brainer. That isn’t hindsight being 20-20.
Wilson’s issues weren’t related to New York, it was him not being handled well. You could have put him in Green Bay or Jacksonville, and if you threw him to the wolves as a rookie, it would have been problematic.
And clearly he was overdrafted. He had one standout season at BYU playing a creme puff schedule. Most weeks he was playing bad defenses, and receivers were wide open.
Bill Parcells believed in picking quarterbacks who played a full college career, guys who played as seniors.
Joe Burrow would be a perfect example of Parcell’s theory making sense.
Now, we have seen some juniors do okay, but there just wasn’t enough film of Wilson against quality opponents.
Some might consider that second-guessing at this point, but whatever the case may be, it’s time for Wilson “to get on with his life’s work” somewhere else to use a famous quote from legendary Pittsburgh Steelers coach Chuck Noll.
That would be best for both sides.
And in trade talks, sell the hell out of the Houston second half.
And don’t allow any more film of Wilson playing against Belichick.
