So many people are writing, and so many talking heads are saying, the Jets should move on from QB Aaron Rodgers and give their new regime a “fresh start” with a different QB.
This is a common narrative in the echo chamber.
And new Jets coach Aaron Glenn is treating the evaluation of the QB, just like that of defensive tackles.
“This thing is not about Aaron Rodgers, folks – this is about the roster,” Glenn said. “We plan on building the best roster that we can. So, whatever that may be — guard, tackle, defensive tackle — that’s what we’re evaluating.”
However, some would argue QBs should not be evaluated like every other position on the roster. After all, it is a QB-driven league.
Think about it, the Jacksonville Jaguars and Chicago Bears just hired head coaches because of the QB.
Now granted, those are young quarterbacks, but it’s illustrative of the importance of getting that position right.
Just look at that AFC Championship Game – KC-Buffalo – these two teams were there because of their QBs – Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen
Rodgers threw the same number of touchdowns as Allen this past regular season – 28.
Who the heck are the Jets going to get who gives them a better chance to win next year at the sport’s most important position?
You can talk “fresh start” for the new regime all you want, but a “fresh start” can turn into a “crappy start” if you don’t have a QB, and that can turn new regimes into fired regimes a couple of years down the road.
People who are so quick to run off a QB, who threw 4 TDs in the season finale, to enter never-never land at the position, just don’t get the NFL. They really don’t. Do you think true answers at QB grow on trees? Why do you think so many coaches keep getting fired every year? Bad QB play.
“If you don’t have a quarterback, it’s tough to win a regular-season game, let alone [a championship],” said long-time NFL offensive tackle Trent Williams.
