This job isn’t for everyone.
It’s a tough assignment in a tough market with a tough media.
There have been some early candidates who seemed to play the leverage game, and didn’t seem that into the position.
While the media shouldn’t be a huge factor in picking a lead football guy, in his market, it has to be part of the equation.
You have to understand what you are getting into here. Some people get here, and are like, “Oh my goodness, this is out of control.”
With all the being said, this should boost the campaigns of Tom Gamble and Brian Gaine.
They both have already worked for the Jets, so they have a feel for what goes on here.
Also, they both have roots in the area – Gamble is from Haddonfield, N.J., and Gaine from Pearl River, N.Y. (and went to high school in Ramsey, N.J.).
I know Haddonfield is closer to Philly, but that market is just as vicious as New York.
Just like Cleveland sensed that Chip Kelly’s heart really wasn’t into the Browns’ job, the Jets need to read the tea leaves with these candidates, and not pick someone who is half-hearted about the spot.
Pick somebody who really, really wants to be here.
Gaine and Gamble seem to be two strong candidates in that regard.
