New Jersey – While the Jets’ performance against the Cincinnati Bengals was inexcusable, taking a closer look at it, while the Jets were bad, the Bengals had something to do with – they were outstanding . . .
Sheldon Richardson continues to make a lot of good things happen.
He’s just too quick for most guards who attempt to block him.
On the Jets’ goal line stand in the first half, Richardson beat one blocker with a spin move, causing another lineman to have to deal with him, and this allowed David Harris a clear path to the Ben Jarvis Green-Ellis, and the play went for no gain. So while Harris made the stop, this play was all about Richardson.
Late in the first half, Richardson blew by guard Kevin Zeitler to stop Gio Bernard on the line.
He’s a terrific football player . . .
Quinton Coples has been kind of quiet. He makes a play here or there, but not a lot of splash plays.
I just don’t think he’s healthy.
He came back very fast from a broken bone in his lower leg, and he’s still hobbling.
He’s sucking it up, but he’s not himself, just yet . . .
You could make a strong argument the Cincinnati Bengals are the best team in the league right now, or at least in the top three.
They have so many weapons on offense, that if you don’t get to Andy Dalton, somebody is going to get open, and you are going to play a price.
They have two first round tight ends – Jermaine Gresham and Tyler Eifert to go along with three tall, athletic receivers in A.J. Green, Marvin Jones and Mo Sanu, to go along with a good slot receiver in Dane Sanzenbacher and a very good receiver out of the backfield in running back Gio Bernard.
And the Jets picked a bad day to not get to the quarterback.
With all the attention the Jets were giving Green and Gresham, it created single coverage situations for Jones and Sanu and they took advantage.
On Jones second touchdown, Darrin Walls had to go to Sanu underneath on the lower right side, and this forced Dawan Landry to cover Jones on the right side of the end zone, which is a major mismatch, and Landry was beat.
I’m not making excuses for the Jets defense, but that Bengals offense is absolutely loaded, and they brought their A+ game on Sunday . . .
We were told that the Jets’ defense is a lot faster this year.
Perhaps on the defensive line with the additions of Richardson and Damon Harrison to the starting lineup, but where else?
Early in the game, you had Garrett McIntyre covering Eifert on a gain of 16. McIntyre isn’t great in coverage – he doesn’t have that much range. Then you had Calvin Pace in the end zone attempting to cover Gresham on his touchdown. Pace was also covering Bernard on his catch-and-run that was ruled a fumble in the end zone, but was then Bengals got the ball back on the one after a replay.
I’m not just not seeing better coverage from the Jets linebackers this year, something the Jets thought they were going to have . . .
