East Rutherford – It’s time for a cornucopia of Jets Whispers from MetLife Stadium, including notes on the cornerback situation, Schefter’s scoop and more . . .
I actually think Antonio Allen is doing a decent job at cornerback. Not great, but decent. Honestly did the Jets lose today because of their corners?
Aside from the Jeremy Ross’ touchdown which I will get back to in a bit, the other passing touchdown was to a tight end Eric Ebron – generally not a cornerback responsibility.
The Jets gave up 24-points today to a pretty prolific offense. A much bigger problem for the Jets was their passing game, not their cornerbacks.
But on the Ross touchdown, you saw Allen’s big shortcoming as a corner. The 6-1, 210-pound Allen does much better against big, physical receivers, than smaller, quicker guys. Ross was a bad match-up for him, and you saw that on this play. Ross used his 4.44 speed to blow by Allen.
Darrin Walls had a solid game.
While there were a few bad plays by cornerbacks today, it was not the cornerbacks who spearheaded the Jets’ loss . . .
Seeing Calvin Pryor walking out of the locker room with a major limp due to thigh injury, I can’t see any way he plays next week. He was hurting big-time . . .
Report today from ESPN’s NFL Insider, Adam Schefter –
“There’s a disenchantment with some in the New York Jets organization at the lack of talent general manager John Idzik has acquired despite the means he had to improve the roster, according to team sources,” wrote Schefter.
“John Idzik’s failure to fill major holes despite millions in cap room have some members of the Jets organization disenchanted, according to sources. The issue existed in the offseason and has lingered into the season, all the way to before Sunday’s game against Detroit. What bothers some in the organization, according to sources, are the holes the Jets left — especially at cornerback, but also at wide receiver, pass rusher and in the return game.”
First of all, Idzik needs to find out where they came from, and get rid of the person or persons. Whatever you think of Idzik, this is despicable behavior.
Brainstorming in the press box with other writers, trying to figure out the suspect, the best idea I heard, was that it was an agent, perhaps of a major coach in the building, who relayed that to a writer, that people in the building aren’t happy with Idzik.
But you know what, I think the source or sources, left out the biggest issue, connected to Idzik – stubbornly making the Jets stick with Geno this year, develop Geno this year, and not throw the keys to Mike Vick.
To me, that is a dereliction of duty.
These games are too important to use them as a petri dish to develop a QB.
I’m not second-guessing because I wrote this repeatedly before the season. I would have started Vick this year, and still considered Geno the quarterback of the future. If Vick got hurt, or the season slipped away, I would turn back to Geno.
He’s just 23 – why is it such sacrilege to sit him this year, and go with Vick, who has so much more experience, and has seen so much more, especially after the Jets missed the playoffs three years in a row?
Look what Tampa Bay did this year. I know they aren’t a model franchise right now, but they went with Josh McCown, after Mike Glennon played a lot this year. McCown got hurt in Week Three, and Glennon filled in and did well.
Sitting back and watching a little would not have hurt Geno.
But I think Idzik’s ego is too entrenched in this Geno experiment, and he needs to take a step back and see the forest for the trees.
It’s time for Rex and Mr. Idzik to stop viewing Geno through rose-colored glasses (above) . . .
I saw fullback Tommy Bohanon in the locker room after the game with a heavily wrapped right shoulder. It didn’t look good . . .
The Lions plan for Calvin Johnson today was brilliant.
He came into the game with an ankle injury that forced him to miss most of practice this week.
So he played today and had two catches for 12 yards. Not typical Megatron numbers.
He was clearly out there as a decoy, and what a decoy he was.
With all the attention he drew, this opened up passing lanes for Golden Tate, Jeremy Ross and Eric Ebron.
Great plan!
