Mobile, Alabama – Dan checks in from the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama with Jets and practice notes . . .
Kind of strange – Mike Maccagnan and Todd Bowles aren’t at the Senior Bowl.
Why?
The reason they aren’t here is because their introductory press conference is tommorrow.
Well honestly, wouldn’t scouting players at the Senior Bowl take precedent over that media matters?
After all, a big reason the Jets hired Maccagnan, was to find better players.
So you hire him, and make him do a press conference over the Senior Bowl, seemed odd.
Why wasn’t the press conference last Wednesday?
From what we hear, one reason for that was because so many writers were in Buffalo for Rex Ryan’s presser.
But also, according to a Jets source, Bowles didn’t sign the paperwork until later in the day, making it official, so that hurt the ability to have it on Wednesday.
And then on Thursday, both Bowles and Maccagnan flew to their old offices, in Arizona and Houston, respectively, to clean out their offices.
The Jets didn’t want to do it Friday because that is a news dump day, and can be less meaningful.
So it will be on tomorrow.
Now I’m not going to be there because I had this Senior Bowl trip planned for a while.
I saw Manish Mehta at the Senior Bowl, and he said he likely won’t be able to get back. There are no direct flights from Mobile, so if you leave in the morning, there is no way you can get back for an 11 am presser.
As for the scouting aspect, I’ve been told Maccagnan and Bowles will be in Mobile Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
I did see a number of Jets scouts here today, but these aren’t Maccagnan’s guys, so you wonder if he totally trusts their world view just yet.
But Maccagnan and Bowles will be able to get video of the Tuesday and Wednesday practices.
I just found it a little strange that the new GM was forced to miss two important scouting days, the first two days of the Senior Bowl, for a press obligation.
But it’s probably not a huge deal.
And also, it’s hard for new GM’s and coaches, to go very far in Mobile, without getting hit up for a job by out of work coaches and personnel guys. It’s like a job fair here.
I saw Terry Bradway at the practice today. He was just fired by the Jets. You know he is hobnobbing . . .
The Jets are likely going to pick a quarterback in the draft, perhaps not in the first round, but somewhere along the way.
Watching the entire first practice at the Senior Bowl today, I wasn’t very impressed with Baylor’s Bryce Petty or Oregon State’s Sean Mannion, but did like East Carolina’s Shane Carden.
Petty and Mannion got most of the reps, and I found them underwhelming.
Then late in the practice, the QB play picked up significantly, and I’m like, “Who is that?”
Pocket presence, accurate, good decision. I know it was just one practice, but Carden was much better than the two more hyped prospects.
He could be this year’s Jimmy Garappolo . . .
There is no football significance to the photo above. I just found Tennessee State guard Robert Myers’ hair interesting. He measures 6-5, but with the hair he’s 6-7. . . .
