Report: The connection between QB Aaron Rodgers and WR Garrett Wilson has hit “a bit of a rough patch” according to “The Athletic.”
Really?
First of all, training camp QB stats provided by reporters are Kabuki Theatre.
Do you have any idea how much experimenting Aaron Rodgers is doing out here?
Do you have any idea how often young receivers run the wrong routes, but the media stat crew gives the QB the incompletion?
A lot of experimenting on ball placement; a lot of work on developing chemistry and getting on the same page. So take media QB stats in training camp practices with a grain of salt.
The only rough patches Jets fans should worry about are if they happen throughout a few games in the regular season, not a few practices early in camp.
And honestly, I didn’t see anything I considered a “rough patch.”
But then again, I don’t bother with ill-conceived training camp QB stats . . .
Jets nickel back Michael Carter is currently out with an ankle injury.
The wrap he was wearing on his right leg went up to below his knee, so it could be a high ankle sprain, so it’s possible we might not see him in the preseason . . .
Joe Tippmann continues to work through some inconsistency with shotgun snaps.
Perhaps, as a young player, with a lot on his plate, he’s having a slight issue multi-tasking.
Like on one of the high snaps, he had Quinnen Williams lining up over him.
William proceeded to beat Tippmann off the ball and shoot a gap.
So on this play, Tippmann had to deal with line calls, a shotgun snap and then blocking one of the NFL’s best defensive tackles lined up over him.
I’m not making excuses for Tippmann, just trying to evaluate what might be going on here.
Recently, Jets coach Robert Saleh was asked about some inconsistency early in linebacker Jamien Sherwood’s time with the Jets, and he said that the Auburn product was so focused on communicating defensive calls to his teammates and helping guys get lined up before the snap, that sometimes it hurt his playmaking ability after the snap.
And I think Tippmann might be working through the same thing.
Sherwood is now in a better place on that front with more experience, and Tippmann will likely get into the comfort zone with more reps doing all these different jobs . . .
Rookie defensive tackle Leonard Taylor had a couple of flash plays today, including two run stops around the line, and a QB pressure. The underdrafted free agent still has a lot to work on, but his first-step quickness into gaps can’t be denied . . .
As you might have heard by now, offensive linemen who commit penalties in practice, are pulled for one play as a punishment.
Two prominent players were subjected to that penalty today – right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker and right tackle Morgan Moses.
So nobody is beyond reproach on this one.
This was a good plan to implement in a program some felt needed a little more accountability.
Two things that usually get player’s attention – losing playing time and getting a little embarrassed – and this small practice penalty encompasses both . . .
One note from Saturday’s practice:
People assume if a player is from a hot state like Florida, they deal with the heat better, but that is probably overblown.
Jets rookie receiver Malachi Corley, a Florida native, got hit hard by the heat at Saturday’s practice.
He was attended to by trainers at one point during the practice, and then a pre-scheduled post-practice press conference was canceled because he was getting some kind of rehydration treatment.
Corley is tough as boot leather as we know, but whether you are from Florida, Texas, Nevada or Arizona, you never know when the heat will get to you on a given day.
