The Jets’ pass defense, which has been one of the NFL’s best this season, had a rough game in Buffalo.
Josh Allen threw for 275 yards, three touchdowns and a 108.2 quarterback rating in Buffalo’s 32-6 win.
The Bills did a lot of damage throwing into a gap in the short middle of the Jets’ zone defense.
Another issue was the Jets seemed to miss nickel back Michael Carter, who was a late scratch due to a hamstring injury.
But in a way, you could argue, the Jets’ defense finally collapsed under the weight having to carry their offense for so many weeks.
That is quite a burden, and it seemed to finally get to them in Buffalo . . .
As you know by now, the Jets are replacing Zach Wilson at quarterback with Tim Boyle.
“[Boyle] is a different style of quarterback, so really it was just to give him an opportunity to see if we can do something with the offense,” Robert Saleh said.
That is such a good way of putting it – “different style of quarterback.”
Boyle is a 6-4, 230-pound pocket passer. He’s a different flavor than Wilson.
And the biggest thing you will see is quicker decisions, a QB who will generally get rid of the ball faster.
You see, even while the Jets’ offensive line has issues, and has been wildly inconsistent in pass protection, there are plays where there is time, and Wilson’s internal clock is just too slow.
A perfect example was on the two-point conversion attempt after the Jets’ only score in Buffalo, a Breece Hall touchdown run, Wilson had all day to throw and didn’t pull the trigger. Why not at least try a 50-50 ball?
You wil\
see a different rhythm, a different pace with Boyle.
Nobody has any idea if this will make a difference, but you will see a discernable difference as far as the ball coming out of the quarterback’s hand faster . . .
There is a lot of speculation about when Aaron Rodgers might be ready to return from a torn Achilles suffered in Week One.
CBS Sports sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson said during the Jets loss to Buffalo:
“They truly believe this is going to happen, they are just trying to stay relevant so he can return and help this team,” Wolfson said.
If that was the thinking, why didn’t they make a QB change sooner? Their red zone and third down offense issues have been going on for quite a few games.
As NFL analyst Mark Schlereth said, “If they play Trevor Siemian, they’re winning that game (against the Raiders). Trevor Siemian is a professional quarterback. He’s going to put you in the right play. He’s going to make the right check. He’s not going to make bonehead decisions and if the guy is open he’s going to hit him.”
Why the Jets are going to Boyle, not Siemian is unclear, and nobody asked Saleh, but whether it is Boyle or Siemian, who will now be the #2, you have to wonder why a change wasn’t made sooner with so much at stake.
